Job summary

West Coast Seniors Housing Management is seeking a Cook 1 to prepare nourishing, visually appealing meals for residents, guests and staff. You will follow menus, ensure safe handling, and support dietary needs with attention to portion control and quality.

This role reports to the Head Chef and is integral to a respectful, resident-focused kitchen. You will coordinate with dietaries, supervise assistants, and participate in menu planning and special events while adhering to budgets and safety

Qualifications

• Grade 12 or equivalent.
• Graduation from a recognized Cooks Training program or equivalent.
• Experience in large quantity food preparation, preferably in healthcare or retirement settings.
• Knowledge of Provincial Food Premises regulations and Canada's Food Guide.
• Knowledge of and experience with special and therapeutic diets.
• Minimum of 2-3 years' culinary experience.
• Food Safe Level 1 certificate; Level 2 an asset.
• Red Seal certificate preferred.
• Serving it Right certification an asset.
• Good sanitation knowledge and some supervisory experience is an asset.
• Successful applicants must pass a vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work with cleaning supplies.

Responsibilities

• Be an engaged collaborative team player and maintain professional relationships.
• Review menus and production sheets before preparing.
• Ensure proper food handling techniques per regulations.
• Complete daily temperature checks for hot and cold foods.
• Complete daily temperature audits for fridges, freezers and storerooms.
• Prepare and serve foods for therapeutic or specialty diets.
• Record menu substitutions in the designated log.
• Coordinate workflow and supervise staff for production, delivery and cleanup.
• Order and receive consumables; manage inventory to minimize waste.
• Adhere to service times and follow production charts within budget.
• Participate in special occasion and theme meal planning.
• Orient new staff and participate in meetings and in-services.
• Maintain a safe environment and follow infection control procedures.
• Contribute to menu planning and departmental initiatives.
• In supervisor's absence, supervise production, staff and emergencies.
• Perform other related duties as required.
