Job summary

West Coast Seniors Housing Management invites applicants for the Cook 1 role to prepare nourishing and visually appealing meals for residents, guests, and staff. You will ensure dietary needs are met and that safe food handling practices are followed.

You will review menus, follow recipes, manage temperatures, and supervise kitchen staff to maintain quality and efficiency. A healthcare/retirement setting background is preferred.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 or equivalent required.
• Graduation from a recognized Cooks Training program or equivalent.
• Experience in large quantity food preparation, preferably in healthcare or retirement setting.
• Knowledge of Provincial Food Premises regulation and Canada’s Food Guide to Healthy Eating.
• Knowledge of and experience with special and therapeutic diets.
• Minimum 2-3 years culinary experience.
• Food Safe Level 1 certificate (Level 2 asset).
• Red Seal Certificate preferred.
• Serving It Right certification asset.
• Good sanitation knowledge and procedures.
• Some supervisory experience asset.
• Must pass vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with team to maintain skilled production and strong service culture.
• Review menus and production sheets before cooking.
• Follow food safety regulations and safe handling techniques.
• Perform daily temperature checks for hot and cold foods.
• Complete audits for fridges, freezers, and storerooms; record results.
• Prepare and serve meals for therapeutic or special diets.
• Make menu substitutions and log changes.
• Coordinate workflow and direct staff for production, delivery, and cleanup.
• Order and receive consumables; maintain inventory to minimize waste.
• Adhere to service schedules and dictated menus within budget.
• Participate in planning and preparing special occasion meals.
• Assist in orientation of new staff and participate in committees.
