Job summary

Shannex Incorporated is seeking a Casual Cook 2 for the Parkland Ajax team in Ajax, Ontario. You will plan and prepare meals, participate in special events, and ensure meals meet quality, temperature and portion standards while maintaining a clean, safe kitchen environment.

Ideal candidates have at least 2 years in a high-volume kitchen, a high-school diploma or GED, and a food handlers’ certificate. This role supports senior housing dining services and offers opportunities for growth within a

Qualifications

  • High-school diploma or GED.
  • Food handlers’ certificate preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of operational experience in a high-volume kitchen.
  • Knowledge of food and catering trends with focus on quality and presentation.
  • Ability to read and follow detailed recipes with teammates.
  • Clear Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Check where applicable.
  • Passion for healthcare and seniors’ quality services.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and prepare meals according to standards, procedures, recipes and menus.
  • Assist with catering and special functions to meet standards.
  • Report shortages, discrepancies or quality issues promptly to supervision.
  • Execute department policies and guidelines as part of the Food Services Team.
  • Deliver meals for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner in the dining room per Brand Standards.
  • Maintain clean, safe kitchen and correct labeling of excess food.
  • Follow waste management guidelines and participate in safety initiatives.

About The Opportunity
  • Plans and prepares meals according to established standards, procedures, recipes and menus, including preparing special meals to meet appropriate therapeutic menu modifications according to established guidelines
  • Assists with preparation of food for special functions (e.g. catering, theme dinners) to ensure service meets established standards
  • Reports any recipe shortages, discrepancies or quality issues to the Executive Chef or supervisor in a timely manner
  • Executes departmental policies, procedures and guidelines as a member of the divisional Food Services Team
  • Executes food services for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner within a Supportive Living Lifestyle dining room in accordance with Brand Standards
  • Executes food Services for special functions such as catering and theme dinners to ensure service meets established standards
  • Consistently ensures food quality, presentation, and service delivery meet established department standards; ensures meals are attractive, the correct temperature and portion size, and that service is timely
  • Introduces self to new resident in the dining rooms as part of resident orientation / welcome
  • Responds to resident food service needs and expectations in accordance to service expectations
  • Effectively communicates and interacts with residents, family members, visitors and volunteers in a courteous and professional manner
  • Assists in the orientation of new Team Members to ensure standards are met
  • Clean and sanitize cooking station daily; maintain the cleanliness of kitchen equipment such as ovens, kettles, mixers, and others to maintain safety and sanitation in the kitchen to meet legislative and organizational standards; responsible for the clear and correct labeling of excess food
  • Follows disposal procedures according to established waste management guidelines for organics, paper, plastics, cans/bottles, non-recyclable material, etc.
  • Additional duties as assigned/required
About You
  • A high-school diploma or a GED
  • Current food handlers’ certificate (preferred)
  • Minimum of 2 years of operational experience in a high-volume kitchen
  • Knowledge of food and catering trends with a focus on quality, production, sanitation, food cost controls, and presentation
  • Ability to read & follow detailed recipes/instructions as required and communicate in an efficient manner in a team-oriented setting
  • Successful candidates will be required to obtain a clear Criminal Record Check , and where applicable, a Vulnerable Sector Check , prior to appointment
  • A passion for the healthcare sector and/or ensuring seniors have access to quality accommodations, services and care
