Every Position contributes to the spiritual and social services mission of The Salvation Army

Harbour Light exists to restore hope and promote recovery in Vancouver’s downtown eastside.

JOB PURPOSE :

The Cook prepares and serves nutritious meals as outlined on menus in accordance with applicable food service and safety regulations.

CHARACTERISTIC JOB DUTIES:

  • Prepares meals; may prepare for special dietary needs of the residents
  • Adapts work practices within specific parameters to ensure the efficient delivery of food services
  • Makes use of and decides on best use of resources, including donations to minimize waste
  • Follows guidelines for the safety and security of food and equipment and monitors practices to ensure adherence
  • May perform some employee supervisory duties in the absence of the Food Services Manager and Kitchen Supervisor
  • May supervises students, volunteers and / or residents in work therapy
  • May order food supplies
  • Maintain a high level of cleanliness at all times within the kitchen and storage areas.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

MINIMUM EDUCATION LEVEL ATTAINED:

The successful job applicant will have completed High School, plus specialized courses of up to six (6) months.

SPECIAL LICENSES, DIPLOMAS, CERTIFICATIONS OR REQUIREMENTS:

Cook’s papers (1 year course)

WHIMS

First Aid

Food Safe

Criminal Record Check

MINIMUM PRIOR RELATED EXPERIENCE:

One year of prior related experience, including institutional kitchen experience or equivalent.

PHYSICAL EFFORT/DEXTERITY REQUIRED:

The performance of the job requires a frequent amount of standing, moderate amounts of lifting, cutting, chopping, carrying supplies and walking.


The incumbent is required to lift more than 20 pounds.

CONCENTRATION REQUIRED:

The performance of the job requires frequent attention to the preparation of food, reading recipes, adhering to safety procedures and regulations and occasionally ordering supplies.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR FINANCIAL RESOURCES:

The incumbent is involved in minor financial matters regularly, or on a relief basis, or has responsibility for the wise use of his/her own resources. He/She may be authorized to spend, disburse, or collect small amounts of cash. The incumbent has very little input into the annual budget..

RESPONSIBILITY FOR HUMAN RESOURCES:

The incumbent is responsible as a group/work leader. He/She is responsible for providing direction and checking results, but generally works along with those supervised.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The incumbent’s work environment is typically in a kitchen in a ministry unit/social services facility.

The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:

  • Dealing with angry people
  • Verbal Abuse
  • Hot/Steamy environment
  • Noisy
  • Crowded in some cases
  • Pressure with timelines
  • Cuts, Burns and entering freezers

EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS:

The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of moderate to severe injury or illnesses due to:

  • Physical attacks by others (verbal)
  • Exposure to toxic chemicals
  • Moving objects
  • Sharp objects
  • Electrical hazards
  • Injury from lifting
  • Falling on wet/slippery floors
  • Cuts, Burns and entering freezers

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES:

The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):

  • Universal Precautions
  • Use of rubber mats
  • Use coats provided to go into freezers
  • Use gloves provided
  • Immunization for Hepatitis B
  • Vaccination against Tuberculosis

HOURS OF WORK:

The normal work week is On Call

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $27.11 to $27.49 with a maximum of $27.86.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
