Job summary

The Cook position at the Government of the Northwest Territories' Corrections Division requires preparing meals for large groups in a secure facility, following WHMIS, sanitation, and food safety standards, and coordinating with the Food Service Supervisor and Facility Manager.

You will supervise inmate work crews at mealtimes, mentor new staff, maintain records, and apply leadership and strong interpersonal skills to support safe custody, rehabilitation, and reintegration goals.

Qualifications

• Provincial Journeyman certificate in cooking and food safety certification.
• Extensive experience in commercial or institutional quantity food preparation.
• Must be First Aid and CPR certified.

Job description

The mandate of the Department of Justice is to administer justice, including policing, community justice, victims services and corrections in the Northwest Territories. This mandate will be carried out in a manner which respects community and indigenous values and encourages communities to assume increasing responsibilities.

Job Information

The Cook provides food services for the centre, within departmental guidelines of the Northwest Territories, in accordance with operational standards established in the Corrections Division, in order to provide safe and secure custody, rehabilitation and reintegration of sentenced and remanded Offenders.

The Cook reports to the Food Service Supervisor or Facility Manager and is indirectly responsible for inmate work crews of up to 12 inmates at mealtimes. The Cook will adhere to and maintain operational priorities and objectives, they will also participate in the orientation training and mentoring of new employees and/or relief workers. The Cook will have knowledge of food service procedures and practices and applicable health, safety (WHMIS), and sanitation standards. They will be able to plan and prepare meals for large numbers of people, and they will have the ability to maintain and keep appropriate records to ensure efficient service levels. The Cook will have proven leadership, interpersonal and problem solving skills and the ability to supervise and instruct inmates. The incumbent will to communicate openly and effectively with an innate ability to build and maintain high, effective, strong working relationships.

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:

Provincial Journeyman certificate in cooking, food safe certification and extensive experience in commercial or institutional quantity food preparation (Extensive is defined as 2 years minimum ongoing experience).

Incumbent must be First Aid and CPR Certified. Awareness of northern Aboriginal traditions and values would be an asset.
