Job summary

Shannex Incorporated in Bedford, Nova Scotia, is seeking a Cook for the Parkland West Bedford team. You will plan and prepare meals, assist with catering and special events, and ensure high standards of quality, temperature, portion size, and timely service in a supportive living setting.

Qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, a current food handlers’ certificate (preferred), and at least 2 years in a busy kitchen.

Qualifications

  • High-school diploma or GED is required.
  • Current food handlers’ certificate preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of operational experience in a high-volume kitchen.
  • Knowledge of food and catering trends with focus on quality, production, sanitation, and presentation.
  • Ability to read and follow detailed recipes and communicate effectively in a team setting.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and prepare meals according to established standards, procedures, recipes and menus, including special therapeutic meals.
  • Assist with preparation for special functions (catering, theme dinners).
  • Report recipe shortages, discrepancies or quality issues to the Executive Chef or supervisor promptly.
  • Execute Food Services for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner per Brand Standards.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of kitchen equipment and follow waste management guidelines.
  • Orient new residents in dining rooms and respond to resident food service needs and expectations.

About The Opportunity
  • Plans and prepares meals according to established standards, procedures, recipes and menus, including preparing special meals to meet appropriate therapeutic menu modifications according to established guidelines
  • Assists with preparation of food for special functions (e.g. catering, theme dinners) to ensure service meets established standards
  • Reports any recipe shortages, discrepancies or quality issues to the Executive Chef or supervisor in a timely manner
  • Executes departmental policies, procedures and guidelines as a member of the divisional Food Services Team
  • Executes food services for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner within a Supportive Living Lifestyle dining room in accordance with Brand Standards
  • Executes food Services for special functions such as catering and theme dinners to ensure service meets established standards
  • Consistently ensures food quality, presentation, and service delivery meet established department standards; ensures meals are attractive, the correct temperature and portion size, and that service is timely
  • Introduces self to new resident in the dining rooms as part of resident orientation / welcome
  • Responds to resident food service needs and expectations in accordance to service expectations
  • Effectively communicates and interacts with residents, family members, visitors and volunteers in a courteous and professional manner
  • Assists in the orientation of new Team Members to ensure standards are met
  • Clean and sanitize cooking station daily; maintain the cleanliness of kitchen equipment such as ovens, kettles, mixers, and others to maintain safety and sanitation in the kitchen to meet legislative and organizational standards; responsible for the clear and correct labeling of excess food
  • Follows disposal procedures according to established waste management guidelines for organics, paper, plastics, cans/bottles, non-recyclable material, etc.
About You

In addition to placing high value on continuous improvement, collaboration and accountability, you bring:

  • A high-school diploma or a GED
  • Current food handlers’ certificate (preferred)
  • Minimum of 2 years of operational experience in a high-volume kitchen
  • Knowledge of food and catering trends with a focus on quality, production, sanitation, food cost controls, and presentation
  • Ability to read & follow detailed recipes/instructions as required and communicate in an efficient manner in a team-oriented setting
  • Successful candidates will be required to obtain a clear Criminal Record Check, and where applicable, a Vulnerable Sector Check, prior to appointment
  • A passion for the healthcare sector and/or ensuring seniors have access to quality accommodations, services and care
