Job summary

Qualifications

The Opportunity

We are presently seeking a Controls Engineering Manager to lead the design, development, and implementation of advanced industrial automation systems for custom manufacturing and processing equipment. This role is ideal for a technical leader who is passionate about automation, robotics, team development, and continuous improvement.

This role is on-site in Strathroy, Ontario and reports to the General Manager.

This role is a backfill for an existing position within the organization

The final compensation will be determined based on the candidate's experience, skills, education, and overall qualifications.

Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Controls Engineers, Automation Engineers, and PLC Programmers.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Establish team objectives and key performance indicators aligned with engineering excellence and project delivery.
  • Support recruitment, succession planning, workforce development, and technical training initiatives.
  • Ensure effective resource allocation to meet project timelines and business objectives.
  • Oversee the full lifecycle of automation projects, including design, programming, testing, commissioning, and customer support.
  • Lead system architecture and controls design for custom automation systems and machinery.
  • Provide technical leadership for
    • Allen-Bradley / Rockwell Automation PLC platforms, including CompactLogix and ControlLogix.
    • HMI and SCADA system development.
    • Beckhoff TwinCAT programming utilizing IEC 61131-3 standards.
    • Motion control systems, servo technologies, and variable frequency drives.
  • Guide the integration of industrial robotics, including Fanuc, ABB, and Motoman/Yaskawa platforms.
  • Support troubleshooting and continuous optimization of controls systems and machine performance.
Project & Program Management
  • Manage multiple automation and controls projects simultaneously while balancing scope, schedule, budget, quality, and safety requirements.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Manufacturing, Project Management, and Customers to ensure successful project delivery.
  • Monitor project risks and implement mitigation strategies to maintain delivery commitments.
  • Support new product development and advanced system integration initiatives.
  • Drive the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies, smart manufacturing solutions, and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) initiatives.
  • Standardize controls architecture, documentation practices, and reusable code libraries.
  • Improve system reliability, maintainability, and overall equipment performance.
  • Research and evaluate emerging technologies in automation, robotics, controls, and manufacturing engineering.
  • Champion Lean and continuous improvement initiatives throughout the engineering function.
Compliance & Safety
  • Ensure automation systems comply with applicable standards, including NFPA 79, CSA, UL, CE, ISO 13849, and IEC 61131.
  • Promote best practices related to machine safety, risk assessments, and functional safety design.
  • Support a workplace culture focused on safety, quality, and regulatory compliance.
What You Bring
  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Automation Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of leadership experience in controls engineering, automation engineering, manufacturing engineering, or a similar environment.
  • Advanced experience with
    • PLC programming, particularly Allen-Bradley / Rockwell Automation platforms.
    • HMI and SCADA systems.
    • Industrial robotics platforms including Fanuc, ABB, and Motoman/Yaskawa.
    • Motion control systems, industrial drives, and industrial networking technologies such as EtherNet/IP and Profinet.
  • Demonstrated success leading complex automation projects from concept through installation and commissioning.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and systems integration capabilities.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, stakeholder management, and team development skills.
  • Experience within custom machinery, automation integration, advanced manufacturing, or related industries.
  • Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, or Continuous Improvement experience is considered an asset.
  • Ability and willingness to travel periodically to customer sites for installation, commissioning, and support activities.
