Job Description

Scope:

Under general supervision, the Controls Engineer assists in the design, testing, and configuration of control programs for the industrial automation of various manufacturing processes aimed at improving safety, quality, delivery, and productivity. The candidate will read and understand electronic and electrical schematics, document programs, and conduct functional and operational tests to verify system performance and troubleshoot issues.

Will work cross-functionally with a team of Automation Engineers as well as Maintenance, Electrical, and Mechanical Technicians to assemble, test, commission, and support production equipment both on company and customer sites.

Major Responsibilities:
  1. Create schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, and control panel hardware design.
  2. Create BOMs of required electrical and controls devices for fully functioning systems.
  3. Write and debug Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) code according to work instructions or customer requirements.
  4. Perform corrective maintenance, non-routine repair, modification, troubleshooting, calibration of PLC/HMI code and system components.
  5. Commission industrial networks and establish communication between PLCs and network components.
  6. Check the function of switches on cylinders, actuators, and other devices to verify functionality.
  7. Confirm machine sequence and operation prior to programming with mechanical technicians or engineers.
  8. Utilize schematics, wiring diagrams, manuals, and other resources.
  9. Maintain records of work performed; assist in documentation for installation, maintenance, calibration, and modification of electronic systems.
  10. Perform field service work for installation, modification, and system servicing.
  11. Advise and assist team leads and management on automation system issues and remedies.
  12. Willingness to travel extensively, including overnight stays within the U.S.
  13. Work extended shifts, including non-day shifts and weekends.
  14. Robot programming and troubleshooting skills are a plus.
Additional Information

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a controls-related field preferred.
  • 3-7 years’ experience in PLC and HMI programming, configuration, troubleshooting in manufacturing.
  • Ability to lead/supervise up to 2 technicians.

  • Comply with health, safety, and environmental procedures.
  • Do not remove or alter safety devices unless energy is controlled.
  • Report unsafe conditions or acts.
  • Report equipment defects and incidents.
  • Use protective equipment as required.
  • Attend safety training.
  • Investigate accidents/incidents.
  • Avoid unsafe conduct.
