Job summary

Qualifications

About The Opportunity

We are seeking a CPA designated Controller to join our client's team on a full-time basis. The ideal candidate will possess a strong technical accounting foundation in a project-based construction environment, along with the leadership skills to take on a broader administrative mandate.

Controller - Permanent - 19202

The Controller is responsible for overseeing all aspects of financial management for a well-established, multi-sector construction group of companies, including corporate accounting, regulatory and financial reporting, budget and forecast preparation, and the development of internal control policies and procedures. This position leads financial risk management, safeguards company assets, and provides the timely, accurate financial insight that guides sound business decisions across the organization. Beyond finance, the role also includes oversight of the company's human resources processes and management of the relationship with its external IT provider, making this a key administrative leadership position.

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Prepare head office overhead budgets in consultation with management, collecting, analyzing, and consolidating financial data to recommend plans
• Achieve financial plan objectives by scheduling expenditures, analyzing variances, and initiating corrective actions
• Manage cash flow by forecasting project and corporate cash requirements, monitoring balances, and ensuring liquidity to meet operational and project obligations
• Partner with Project Managers, Estimators, and Operations to review project performance and margins, and improve the accuracy of future bids
• Prepare and publish timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, reporting on the company's financial condition to senior leadership and external stakeholders
• Oversee full-cycle accounting, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll for field and office staff
• Monitor the company's externally managed investment portfolio, reconciling third-party statements and reporting on holdings and returns
• Oversee project cost accounting, including job costing that tracks labour, equipment, and material costs against project budgets
• Lead quarterly work-in-progress (WIP) reviews with Operations and Project Managers, and apply percentage-of-completion revenue recognition
• Manage progress billings, subcontractor progress draws, holdbacks/retainage, and lien compliance under the Construction Act
• Coordinate regulatory reporting and manage government reporting requirements and tax filings, including CRA and WSIB obligations
• Establish, monitor, and enforce financial policies, procedures, and internal controls; coordinate external audits
• Manage accounting department operations and staff, including hiring, training, coaching, and performance reviews
• Oversee the company's HR function and manage the relationship with its external IT provider

About You

• CPA designation preferred
• Diploma or degree in Accounting, Business, Finance, or a related discipline
• 8+ years of combined accounting and finance experience, with proven experience as a financial controller, preferably in the construction industry
• Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and procedures, including general ledger functions and the month-end/year-end close process
• Demonstrated experience preparing financial statements and regulatory reporting
• Experience with NetSuite or a comparable ERP is a strong asset; familiarity with Procore or similar construction project management software is a plus
• Strong analytical, organizational, and communication abilities, with outstanding attention to detail

• The salary band for this opportunity is $100,000 to $130,000 depending on relevant previous experience, together with a comprehensive benefits package
