Job description

Controller, Construction - Permanent - 19445

About the Opportunity

PNL Recruitment is partnering with a rapidly growing, privately held Calgary construction company to recruit a Controller.

This is a newly created position.

Not because someone left. Because the business has grown.

The company has reached the point where an accounting structure that worked extremely well at an earlier stage now needs to evolve with the size and sophistication of the business.

This isn't a turnaround. You're not walking into a mess.

You're joining a successful, well-organized business that has simply outgrown the accounting infrastructure that got it here.

Working closely with the CFO, you'll take increasing ownership of the accounting function while improving reporting, systems and processes and helping build the finance infrastructure required for the company's next stage of growth.

This isn't about maintaining someone else's department. It's about helping build your own.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting including AP, AR, GL and month-end close
  • Own and improve job costing, WIP reporting and project financial tracking
  • Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements and management reporting
  • Monitor and forecast cash flow, project costs and capital requirements
  • Lead budgeting, forecasting and variance analysis
  • Partner directly with Project Managers, Operations and senior leadership on project performance and profitability
  • Strengthen internal controls, accounting policies and financial processes
  • Review and improve GL structure and account mapping
  • Help integrate accounting and project-management systems, reducing manual processes and improving information flow
  • Coordinate year-end, tax and reporting requirements with external accountants
  • Gradually transition appropriate accounting responsibilities in-house
  • Help build and develop the accounting team as the company continues to grow
About You

You're an experienced accounting and finance professional who can operate at a Controller level while still being comfortable in the weeds.

You're a builder.

You enjoy understanding how a business actually works, challenging outdated processes and finding better ways to get things done.

The successful candidate will have the following:

  • Progressive Controller-level accounting and finance experience
  • Strong construction, job costing, WIP and project accounting knowledge
  • Solid financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting and cash-flow experience
  • Strong systems and technology aptitude
  • Experience improving or implementing accounting systems and processes
  • The ability to work effectively with project teams and operational leaders
  • A hands-on, entrepreneurial and solutions-focused approach
  • The confidence to work independently without needing a roadmap for every decision

Construction experience is strongly preferred. CPA is an asset, but it is not mandatory.

More important is your ability to understand the business, solve problems, improve systems and help build something for the long term.

About the Job

This is primarily an office-based Calgary position with a high-trust, high-accountability culture and considerable flexibility around how professionals manage their time.

The organization is entrepreneurial, growing and intentionally less corporate. People are given autonomy, expected to take ownership and trusted to deliver.

The opportunity includes:

  • $120,000 to $140,000+ base salary, depending on experience
  • Annual performance-based bonus
  • Employee Share Ownership Program
  • Approximately 4 weeks vacation
  • Professional development and education support
  • Flexible, trust-based working environment
  • Significant exposure to the CFO and senior leadership
  • Opportunity to build and eventually lead a growing accounting team
  • Genuine longer-term career runway toward Director / VP Finance-level responsibility

If you're looking for a polished accounting department to inherit and simply maintain, this probably isn't your role.

If you're energized by the idea of building the next version of one, we'd like to talk.

We value fairness, confidentiality, and human judgment in every stage of our hiring process. We do not use automated or AI-driven screening tools to assess applications. Each submission is reviewed by an experienced recruiter to ensure a thoughtful and equitable evaluation of every candidate.

Thank you for your interest in this role. One of our Recruiters will be in touch with you if your profile meets the requirements for the role and the expectations of our clients. Please note that all candidates must be permitted to work in Canada to be considered for this opportunity.
