Reporting directly to the VP Finance and Corporate Services, the Controller will play a key leadership role in overseeing the company’s accounting operations, ensuring the integrity of financial reporting, strengthening internal controls, and supporting informed business decisions.

This is an opportunity for a hands-on finance professional who enjoys both the technical aspects of accounting and the bigger picture of business performance. The successful candidate will bring strong financial expertise, a continuous improvement mindset, and the ability to translate financial information into meaningful business insights.

As an established and growing professional engineering firm, we offer the opportunity to work closely with senior leadership, contribute to operational improvements, and have a direct impact on the company’s continued success.

What we expect from you:

  • CPA designation and membership in good standing with a recognized Canadian provincial CPA body.
  • 7+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including experience in a Controller, Accounting Manager, or comparable senior finance role.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge, financial reporting expertise, and understanding of Canadian accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience managing month-end and year-end reporting, financial controls, and accounting processes.
  • Strong analytical and commercial acumen, with the ability to interpret financial results and provide practical business recommendations.
  • Experience leading, mentoring, and developing accounting professionals.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting systems. Experience with BQE CORE or similar project-based accounting software is an asset.
  • Experience in professional services, engineering, consulting, or construction is an asset.
  • A proactive, detail-oriented approach, with strong organizational skills and a commitment to accuracy and accountability.
  • High professional integrity, sound judgment, and the ability to communicate effectively with both financial and non-financial stakeholders.

What you are going to do:

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring accurate and timely financial information.
  • Lead the monthly and annual financial close processes, including reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statement preparation.
  • Prepare and review monthly financial statements, management reports, and key performance indicators.
  • Coordinate with external accountants and auditors to ensure the timely completion of annual financial statements.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, tax requirements, and financial reporting obligations.
  • Financial Analysis & Business Performance
  • Analyze financial performance, including revenues, profitability, expenses, working capital, and cash flow.
  • Provide meaningful variance analysis and actionable financial insights to support management decisions.
  • Support the VP of Finance and Corporate Services with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning.
  • Monitor accounts receivable, cash flow, and working capital to support effective financial management.
  • Contribute to the development and improvement of financial reporting and performance measurement tools.
  • Supervise, mentor, and support accounting team members, promoting accountability, accuracy, and professional development.
  • Work collaboratively with project managers, operational leaders, and senior management to improve financial understanding and performance.
  • Maintain a hands-on approach, contributing directly to accounting activities when required.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, and strong financial stewardship.
