Job description

About GAM Tech

GAM Tech is a security-first managed IT services provider. We started in Calgary in 2012 and now run teams across nine Canadian cities, looking after small and mid-sized businesses that depend on us to keep their technology working and their data safe. We are SOC2 certified and a Certified B Corporation, and we have been recognized on Canada's Best Workplaces and Canada's Most Admired Corporate Cultures lists.

Compensation

On-target earnings of $135,000 to $155,000 per year

Base salary of $120,000 to $140,000 depending on experience and CPA depth

Plus a performance incentive of 10% to 12% of base, tied to company profitability and financial milestones

Plus health and dental benefits, and paid professional development, including CPA dues

The Opportunity

We are hiring our first true Controller. Today, our finance function is functional but not strategic; the numbers get produced, the year-end gets filed, and nobody is turning any of it into better decisions. That is the gap you close.

You will own the full accounting cycle for a multi-entity, multi-province group, and you will be the person the leadership team turns to when we need to know whether a service line actually makes money, what a pricing change does to margin, or whether an acquisition is worth doing.

This role is built with room above it. As our group of companies grows, we expect finance leadership to grow with it, and we would rather promote the person who already knows our numbers cold than hire a stranger into that seat later. We will be direct about that path with you during the interview process.

What You'll Do
Financial Ownership and Reporting
  • Own the full accounting cycle across multiple entities and provinces, including month end close, reconciliations, and consolidated reporting.
  • Produce monthly financial statements and management reporting that leadership actually uses to make decisions.
  • Lead year-end end-to-end, including working papers, and coordinate directly with our external accountants.
  • Own the general ledger, chart of accounts, and accounting policy under ASPE.
  • Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, collections, and the vendor payment cycle.
Recurring Revenue and Profitability
  • Own recurring revenue reporting. Monthly recurring revenue, contract value, churn, expansion, and per-seat economics, reported in a way that shows where the business is actually going.
  • Build and maintain gross margin reporting by service line, by contract, and by client, and tell us plainly which ones are underwater.
  • Analyze labour utilization and cost to serve, and connect delivery cost to contract profitability.
  • Support pricing decisions with real numbers, including renewal increases, discount requests, and new service pricing.
  • Track and report on EBITDA, working capital, and cash conversion, and flag the trend before it becomes a problem.
Planning and Strategy
  • Build the annual budget and rolling forecast, and hold the business accountable to it.
  • Own cash flow forecasting, banking relationships, and credit facilities.
  • Model the financial impact of expansion into new cities and new service lines.
  • Support acquisition work, including financial due diligence, quality of earnings review, and post close integration of the acquired company's books.
Systems, Automation, and Reporting Infrastructure
  • Take ownership of our finance technology stack and improve it; the accounting system, the professional services automation platform, billing, payroll, and expense management all need to talk to each other better than they do today.
  • Replace manual reporting with automated reporting. We build internal automation and AI tooling here, and we expect our Controller to use it rather than rebuild the same spreadsheet every month.
  • Bring new approaches to the table. If a process we have run for five years can be done better, we want to hear the argument, with the numbers behind it.
Controls, Compliance, and Payroll
  • Maintain internal controls and financial processes that stand up to our SOC2 obligations and to external review.
  • Oversee payroll across multiple provinces, working with our HR function.
  • Manage GST, QST, provincial filings, corporate tax coordination, and all statutory remittances and deadlines.
  • Manage insurance renewals and financial risk reporting.
Leadership
  • Build and lead the accounting function as it grows, including hiring and developing staff under you.
  • Act as a business partner to the leadership team, not a report generator.
  • Present financial results and recommendations directly to the CEO and the leadership team.
What You Bring
Required
  • CPA designation in good standing. This is a hard requirement and applications without it will not be considered.
  • Seven or more years of progressive accounting experience, including full ownership of month end and year end.
  • Demonstrated understanding of recurring revenue business models, including how contract mix, churn, and cost to serve drive profitability.
  • Experience preparing financial statements under ASPE and coordinating an external year end.
  • Strong command of multi-entity accounting and multi-province payroll and sales tax in Canada.
  • The judgment and the spine to bring the leadership team an answer it did not want, and to defend it with numbers. You will be challenged on your work here, and we expect you to challenge back.
  • Genuine comfort with new systems and tools. Our stack changes, our automation changes, and we need someone who treats that as interesting rather than as a threat.
  • Clear written and verbal communication with people who do not read financial statements for a living.
Preferred
  • Experience in a managed services, SaaS, subscription, or professional services business.
  • Public practice background, particularly assurance or advisory for owner-managed businesses.
  • Experience with mergers and acquisitions, due diligence, or post acquisition integration.
  • Hands‑on experience with business intelligence and reporting tools such as Power BI, and with professional services automation platforms.
  • Experience building a finance function from a small base rather than inheriting a mature one.
What We Offer
  • On-target earnings of $135,000 to $155,000; a competitive base salary plus a performance incentive tied to company profitability, not to activity metrics.
  • Health and dental coverage, and paid professional development including CPA dues and continuing education.
  • Direct access to the CEO and a genuine seat in business decisions; this is not a role where finance is consulted after the fact.
  • A clear leadership track as our group of companies grows, discussed openly during the hiring process.
  • A collaborative, on‑site team at our Calgary head office.
  • The chance to build a finance function properly, with the mandate and the support to do it.
Work Schedule

Full‑time, Monday to Friday, on‑site at our Calgary head office.

Additional flexibility will be needed around month end, year end, and budget season.
