Job description

Overview

Watson Goepel LLP is a well-established multi-service law firm with over 40 years of experience. With 35+ lawyers across our Vancouver and West Vancouver offices.

We are looking for a full-time Controller to join our Vancouver office. Reporting to the Management Committee, the Controller is responsible for overseeing the accounting operations of the Firm (financial reporting, trust accounting, billing, accounts payable, accounts receivable, accounting systems, financial planning, and analysis) and oversees the accounting team with four individuals reporting to them.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Management of accounting department staff.
  • Oversee daily operations of the accounting department.
  • Monitor the Firm’s financial performance, cashflow, expenses, trust requisitions, lawyers’ billings to budget performance, tax implications, and provide timely advice to the Management Committee.
  • Prepare the annual operating budget (revenue and operating costs).
  • Prepare financial and billing reports for the Management Committee, the partnership, and the Compensation Committee.
  • Ensure financial reporting and forecasting is continually reviewed and updated based on strategic needs.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting standards.
  • Track Partners and associate counsel monthly draws and manage undrawn income in conjunction with the Management Committee.
  • Oversee accounts receivable, responsible for improving collections.
  • Generate reports for business development initiatives and advice on client trends.
  • Manage the relationship with the Firm’s bank, accountants, and suppliers as required.
  • Oversee the annual review.
  • Conduct competitive supplier costs review.
  • Develop new and improve existing accounting processes, including file opening and file closing.
  • Establishing and implementing financial controls.
  • Collaborate with partners and other managers in the Firm.
  • Manage compliance with Law Society rules and accounting regulations.
  • Performs special projects as assigned by the Management Committee.

Requirements

  • Canadian CPA designation.
  • 5 plus years of experience in a supervisory role.
  • Experience in financial reporting systems.
  • Elite 3E legal accounting software is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft (Excel, SharePoint, Outlook, etc.) to a level that is commensurate with a senior financial leadership position.
  • Advanced leadership and business skills.
  • Proven leader, mentor and collaborator.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Energetic, self-starter with a strong work-ethic.
  • Ability to take ownership of issues and tasks.

Salary

$130,000 - $150,000 based on level of experience. Plus an annual performance-based bonus.
