Job description

Rotaflow is a premier commercial and industrial fire protection solutions provider based in Edmonton, Alberta, serving clients across Western Canada. For over 30 years, we have designed, built, installed, retrofitted, and maintained fire protection systems and industrial utilities for some of the world's leading energy companies and critical infrastructure projects.

At Rotaflow, our mission is to protect the lives and assets of our clients and our own. We take pride in fostering a safe, innovative, and collaborative workplace where talented people from diverse backgrounds come together to deliver exceptional results.

Position Overview

We are seeking a strategic, forward-thinking Controller to lead our finance and accounting function. Reporting directly to the CEO and Fractional CFO, you will play a critical role in driving financial performance, supporting operational excellence, and modernizing our finance department.

This is not a traditional accounting role. We are looking for a financial leader who is passionate about continuous improvement, automation, and leveraging technology and AI to create efficient, scalable processes. You will lead and develop a dedicated team of five while partnering closely with operations to provide meaningful financial insights that support informed business decisions.

During your first 90 days, your primary focus will be understanding the business, strengthening project reporting (including Work in Progress and job costing), and identifying opportunities to streamline processes through automation and technology.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversee all financial operations, including month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring the timely and accurate delivery of financial statements.
  • Financial reporting and analysis.
  • Manage cash flow forecasting, budgeting, and variance analysis to support strategic decision-making by the executive team.
  • Ensure compliance with all accounting standards, tax regulations, and statutory reporting requirements.
  • Serve as the primary liaison for external auditors, banking partners, and surety/bonding companies.
Project Accounting & Cost Control
  • Champion the job costing process, ensuring labor, materials, indirect costs, and equipment are accurately allocated by job, phase, and cost code.
  • Own the Work in Progress (WIP) reporting process, providing project managers and leadership with clear, real-time visibility into project profitability, over/under-billing, and cost-to-complete metrics.
  • Ensure seamless financial data flow and reconciliation between our project management system (Procore) and our financial ERP (Spectrum).
Process Improvement, Automation & AI
  • Critically evaluate existing finance and accounting workflows to identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies.
  • Lead the implementation of lean accounting principles to reduce waste and accelerate the financial close.
  • Research, recommend, and deploy AI-driven tools and automation software (e.g., automated AP routing, AI-assisted WIP forecasting, automated data entry) to modernize the department.
  • Drive the continuous improvement of the Procore-Spectrum integration to eliminate double-entry and improve data integrity.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a finance team of five, encompassing general accounting, payroll, cost accounting, accounts payable/invoicing, and accounts receivable.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous learning, and cross-training within the department.
  • Set clear performance goals and provide regular feedback to ensure the team is operating at peak efficiency.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration. A CPA designation is highly preferred.
  • Experience: 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a Controller or senior financial management role within the construction, mechanical, or industrial contracting industry, an asset.
  • Industry Knowledge: Deep understanding of construction accounting principles, including percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, job costing, and WIP reporting.
  • Systems Proficiency: Hands-on experience with Spectrum (Viewpoint) and Procore is highly desirable. Must possess strong advanced Excel skills and a proven track record of implementing or optimizing financial systems.
  • Tech-Forward Mindset: A demonstrated interest in and aptitude for leveraging technology, automation, and AI to solve business problems and streamline operations.
  • Leadership: Proven ability to manage, mentor, and build high-performing teams.
  • Communication: Exceptional ability to translate complex financial data into actionable insights for non-financial project managers and executives.
