Job description

Our client is searching for a Controller to join their team. This role will be responsible for providing financial leadership, expertise, and support to the Corporate Accounting team, Finance Managers, and others within the company as required. A successful candidate will be a member of the financial leadership team responsible for all month-end close activities, reporting, and financial processes for the company. This role reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer.

Your success will be defined by your ability to :

1. Ensure all items on the balance sheet are maintained, accurate, and reconciled
2. Prepare intercompany transactions as required
3. Ensure all sub ledgers are balanced to the general ledger
4. Ensure financial records are maintained in compliance with accepted policies and procedures
5. Ensure all financial reporting deadlines are met
6. Ensure accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year-end close
7. Lead the annual audit process with external auditors
8. Be responsible for the annual operational and capital budget process by reviewing for reasonableness and providing feedback in adherence to KPI standards
9. Be responsible for the quarterly re-forecasting process by reviewing for reasonableness and providing feedback
10. Review financial results and analysis with senior operational and financial management
11. Recommend improvements for the CMiC system and assist in developing business solutions for the team
12. Understand and monitor the use of the CMiC system to ensure accurate data capturing and reporting
13. Assist in identifying and recommending development and maintenance of the CMiC system as the business environment evolves
14. Ensure that any changes to the system are implemented in a timely and effective manner
15. Ensure compliance with all commodity tax requirements within the appropriate timelines
16. Be the subject matter expert on Corporate taxation and Excise tax
17. Offer guidance on reporting and evaluation methods for goods subject to taxation
18. Oversee and coordinate the entire excise tax compliance process, focusing on risk reduction and accuracy
19. Review and manage tax research based on current and proposed tax legislation, including tax memoranda and recommendations
20. Collaborate with tax authorities to ensure compliance and resolve issues
21. Offer guidance on cross-border issues including the transfer of equipment and individuals
22. Develop, implement, maintain, monitor, and document the accounting processes and controls to ensure internal controls and compliance
23. Communicate process variations to business units and work collaboratively to implement effective processes
24. Provide guidance to the team on US GAAP
25. Manage the Corporate Accounting team within the company
26. Plan for succession for each position in the group
27. Monitor and implement development plans for direct reports and ensure completion for all finance personnel

Your strengths include :

1. A Degree or Diploma in Commerce, Business Administration, or equivalent
2. 10+ years of Accounting or Finance experience with 5+ years of supervisory experience
3. A Professional Accounting Designation (CMA, CA, CGA, CPA) is required
4. Knowledge of CMiC is an asset
5. Strong interpersonal communication and customer service skills
6. Strong knowledge of US GAAP Reporting Standards
7. Strong knowledge of Canadian Corporate Tax and Excise Tax
8. Knowledge of accounting, financial theories, practices, tax, and legislation
9. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and computer skills
10. Ability to multitask, prioritize, and adapt quickly in a dynamic environment
11. Organizational skills to meet deadlines and handle multiple tasks under pressure
12. Accurate data entry and updating in accounting records
13. Ability to handle sensitive information confidentially
14. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills for decision-making
