Job summary

The City of Victoria BC is seeking a Concrete Finisher’s Assistant to support the Engineering & Public Works team. The role involves assisting in forming, placing and finishing concrete for curbs, gutters and sidewalks on a 40‑hour week schedule.

This temporary position runs up to 6 months with a starting wage of $32.09 per hour (Pay Grade 4) and may require operation of light equipment and adherence to safety and quality standards.

Qualifications

• Grade 10 education or equivalent with valid BC driver’s licence.
• 1 year of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Temporary position up to 6 months; may substitute in a more senior position.

This competition may be used to establish an eligibility list to fill future vacancies within this department, in accordance with the CUPE Local 50 Collective Agreement. The list will remain in effect for up to six months.

POSITION FUNCTION

Assist in the construction of forms and placing of concrete for curbs, gutters and sidewalks.

KEY DUTIES

• Operate various hand and power equipment such as shovels, jackhammers and concrete saws to prepare sites for concrete work such as sidewalks, curbs, gutters and driveways; lift and load broken concrete; erect, strip and clean forms; operate vehicle to pick up and deliver construction materials; act as padman to direct the operation of various construction and excavation equipment.
• Assist in constructing forms to grades and alignments established from grade sheets and control points; assist with setting pins and arms to control the alignment of the curb extruder.
• Place concrete by shovelling and levelling; assist with first stage jointing and edging; apply various curing compounds; assist in finishing exposed aggregate concrete by brooming and clean-up, and other activities such as pattern stamping, setting castings, electrical boxes, post sleeves, and interlocking pavers.
• Perform related duties where qualified.

INDEPENDENCE

Work is assigned by supervisor and reviewed while in progress.

Problems are referred to supervisor.

Qualifications
