Make a difference
The Community Safety Advisor (CSA), reporting to the Staff Sergeant, is responsible for gathering information, maintaining relationships with residents, community agencies, Toronto Police Service, City of Toronto officials, and others to identify issues and support solutions. They also provide administrative and analytical support to transfer information and reports within CSU and to the TCHC regions and investigative unit to enhance tenancy management.
What you’ll do
Service Facilitation
- Research and analyze data sources to identify current and emerging crime and social order issues, and forward summaries for further investigation.
- Develop recommendations and strategies to address identified issues.
- Provide community safety advice to Regional Operations Managers to meet safety expectations and goals.
- Compile and verify statistical data using spreadsheets and the TCHC HoMES EasyTrac Database.
- Coordinate with the City of Toronto’s Crisis Response Team during major incidents.
- Conduct CPTED safety audits and develop community safety plans.
- Vet CSU reports to deliver actionable intelligence without violating legislation.
- Disseminate information regarding tenancy issues to management for better tenancy management.
- Collaborate with tenant-facing staff and tenants to support vulnerable individuals or those with mental health needs.
- Assist in responding to inquiries from the internal Complaints Investigator.
Planning and Program Delivery
- Organize safety meetings with stakeholders.
- Develop crime prevention strategies.
- Align activities with CSU responses to crime and social order issues.
- Consult weekly with CSU Staff Sergeant to coordinate resources and programs.
- Coordinate community safety initiatives within assigned portfolios.
- Identify safety risks and develop mitigation strategies.
- Prepare reports for internal and external audiences.
Education & Community Outreach
- Facilitate community safety awareness and outreach activities.
- Build relationships with community groups and stakeholders.
- Advise managers on anti-social tenancy issues.
- Coordinate with Resident and Community Services teams.
- Maintain relationships with Toronto Police and City officials to enhance safety.
- Engage with residents and communities, especially after critical incidents.
What you’ll need
- College diploma in relevant fields such as community development, criminology, law enforcement, or social work.
- Minimum 5 years of related experience.
- Knowledge of safety approaches, security planning, and management.
- Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) Level I certification is an asset.
- Knowledge of relevant legislation and codes, including the Criminal Code, Fire Safety Code, and Residential Tenancy Act.
- Understanding of issues in supportive community housing affecting safety and well-being.
- Knowledge of TCHC policies and community safety principles.
- Ability to develop safety plans, audits, and operational/business plans.
- Strong understanding of social development principles and root causes of criminal behavior.
- Experience working with youth, and expertise in security technology and target hardening techniques.
- Coordination, analytical, organizational, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication, facilitation, and presentation skills.
- Valid Ontario driver’s license (proof required at offer stage).
