Job summary

PortsToronto has a permanent, full-time opportunity for the role of Safety Advisor.

Position Overview

The Safety Advisor plays a key role in supporting health and safety efforts to ensure a safe, compliant work environment across the organization. Responsibilities include developing, implementing, and continuously improving safety programs, policies, and procedures. The Safety Advisor collaborates with management and staff to promote safety awareness, mitigate risks, and ensure regulatory compliance.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Perform safety inspections and audits; document findings and recommend corrective actions.
  2. Investigate workplace incidents and near-misses; prepare reports and suggest preventative measures.
  3. Maintain safety records; ensure compliance with OHSA and industry standards.
  4. Provide safety training and support regulatory inspections.
  5. Support the development and review of safety programs and risk assessments.
  6. Coordinate Worker Health and Safety Committee activities and meetings.
  7. Assist in incident investigations, recordkeeping, and safety audits.
  8. Manage online safety platforms and ensure accessibility of SDS.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety or related field.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or equivalent; in progress is acceptable.
  • Experience in industrial or construction safety, especially with unionized teams.
  • Strong knowledge of the Canada Labour Code Part II, OSHA, CSA standards, and relevant regulations.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and investigation skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel and Word.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and handle sensitive information ethically.
  • Willingness to travel to various locations; bilingual in French is an asset.
