Job summary

United for Literacy in Canada seeks a Program Coordinator to lead tutoring, summer programs and volunteer initiatives across Northern Ontario communities such as Greenstone, Longlac and Geraldton. The role centers on delivering one-on-one reading support, developing workshops, and coordinating interns and volunteers.

You will drive program performance, assess outcomes, and strengthen external relationships with partner schools, learners and community partners.

Qualifications

  • One to three years experience in related field; post-secondary education preferred
  • Knowledge and understanding of the communities served, program planning and evaluation, partnership development and sustainability, volunteer management, relevant socio-economic issues and trends
  • Experience delivering training material and fostering a vibrant, inclusive learning environment
  • Experience working with children and youth, ideally in an educational setting with students who are at a low to intermediate reading level
  • Excellent communication skills; confidence to speak in front of diverse groups of varying sizes
  • Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously, demonstrating adaptability, critical thinking, time management, and problem solving
  • Self-directed and able to accomplish goals with minimal supervision and as part of a team
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • PC Proficiency (MS Office Suite including Word, Outlook, Teams, Excel, and PowerPoint)
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle
  • A current Criminal Records Check (or be willing to obtain it prior to the start of employment)

Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one reading support to students identified by partner schools; develop and deliver summer programs; attend community events.
  • Implement and evaluate programs by collecting qualitative and quantitative data from learners, teachers, families, and community partners.
  • Customize programming to partner context and learner needs.
  • Coordinate resources required to ensure program effectiveness.
  • Recruit, coordinate and manage Interns and volunteers by communicating expectations, planning for, monitoring and evaluating performance outcomes.
  • Provide tutor training tailored to program-type and learner needs.
  • Influence performance levels through ongoing coaching and feedback, while enforcing organizational values, policies and practices.
  • Design, deliver and evaluate literacy related workshops for staff and volunteers of partner organizations, other community stakeholders, parents and learners.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
1) Program performance and compliance (50%)

2) People management (30%)
  • Recruit, coordinate and manage Interns and volunteers by communicating expectations, planning for, monitoring and evaluating performance outcomes.
  • Provide tutor training tailored to program-type and learner needs.
  • Influence performance levels through ongoing coaching and feedback, while enforcing organizational values, policies and practices.
3) Professional development (10%)
  • Design, deliver and evaluate literacy related workshops for staff and volunteers of partner organizations, other community stakeholders, parents and learners.
4) Relationship management (10%)
  • Build, manage and sustain external/internal relationships necessary to support organizational goals by liaising effectively with partners, volunteers, learners, management team and supporters; attending and contributing at meetings, and accurately representing the needs and interests of the organization.

  • Experience working with Indigenous and newcomer populations
  • Bilingual in English & French an asset
  • Physically able to lift up to 10-20 lbs
  • Knowledge of social media platforms and ability to create materials using Canva
Working with United for Literacy
  • Salary: $45,330 annually
