Communications Coordinator

Location: 11738 Kingsway Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta

Closing Date: Until Suitable Candidate Found

Position Status: Full Time (40 hrs per week), Permanent

The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is looking for a Communications Coordinator to strategize, execute, and support the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s Communications & Citizen Engagement Department. Reporting to the Communications Supervisor, the successful candidate will support content development on all platforms for the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and stakeholders. The Communications Coordinator will take initiative, follow through, and provide constructive and creative input that contributes to the development, execution, and maintenance of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government’s communications strategy and presence. The successful candidate must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-demand environment, with the ability to manage tight deadlines and juggle multiple projects at once.

Key Responsibilities

  • Craft and execute communications strategies, plans, and tactics aligning with Otipemisiwak Métis Government goals.
  • Write, edit, and publish copy for multiple platforms, including but not limited to websites, social media, radio, video, and various print products.
  • Create presentations, reports, newsletters, and other communication collateral where needed.
  • Regularly review and report on social analytics, assessing performance campaigns and setting strategic goals.
  • Assist with updates to internal and external communication channels such as websites, social media, email newsletters, print material, and partner organizations/offices.
  • Work with departments to lead and achieve communications objectives on projects where needed.
  • Execute communications needs at events, including photography and social media, as required.
  • Proactively develop networks with internal and external stakeholders to build relationships.
  • Present a positive and professional image of the organization when interacting with employees, clients/customers, visitors, and other external stakeholders.
  • Other duties as required or assigned.

Skills and Competencies

  • Knowledge of marketing and communications principles and practices.
  • Competent in Social Scheduling, Survey Monkey, and WordPress and other content management systems.
  • Strong technical skills and knowledge of digital media.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills, including professional email etiquette.
  • Ability to produce professional documents, reports, and presentations with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Sound analytical thinking, planning, prioritization, and execution skills.
  • Exceptional organization and time management skills, with the ability to multitask and effectively manage and prioritize requests and deadlines.
  • Ability to assess options and implications, engage different perspectives, and create strategic solutions for communications challenges.
  • Flexible and adaptable to work in a diverse and fast-paced environment.
  • Competency to work with and convey messages to different audiences.
  • Ability to work in an open work environment with a very collaborative team.
  • Political sensitivity and ability to deal with confidential information.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven track record of building collaborative partnerships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of Métis history, culture, and issues affecting Métis people. An in-depth understanding of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government and Métis culture.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary communications-related education.
  • Minimum 2-3 years’ work experience in professional writing, journalism, communications, public relations, government relations, or similar role.
  • Experience in SEO, keyword research, and analytic tools (e.g. Google Analytics).
  • Experience with photography, DSLR and video cameras, and Adobe editing software.
  • Knowledge of policy and regulatory affairs is an asset.
  • Indigenous relations experience an asset.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to work in the office in Edmonton, Alberta.
  • Ability to work a regular schedule of Monday to Friday, 8:30 – 4:30, as well as occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to travel throughout Alberta, on occasion.
  • Reliable transportation and a valid Class 5 driver’s license.
