Job summary

Hotels Canada is seeking an entry-level Communications Assistant to support our day-to-day communications across member, advocacy, event, and digital channels. You will help create content, coordinate activities, and manage timelines with the team.

The ideal candidate is highly organized, creative, and eager to learn—recent graduates or those starting in co-ops, internships, or related projects are encouraged to apply. This role offers hands-on experience in a busy association environment.

Qualifications

  • Degree or diploma in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading with high attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational skills; ability to manage multiple deadlines.
  • Experience with Basecamp or similar project management tools is a plus.
  • Familiarity with social media, email marketing, content management systems, and Microsoft 365.
  • Experience with Canva or similar design tools and visual content creation.
  • Bilingualism in French and English is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Content Development: Draft, edit, and proofread newsletters, website copy, social media posts, event promotions, advocacy updates, and other materials.
  • Digital Communications: Build and distribute email campaigns; schedule social content; update website pages; QA across channels.
  • Advocacy & Corporate Communications: Assist with member updates, research releases, presentations, and key messages.
  • Event Marketing & Support: Coordinate communications for conferences, webinars and events, including campaigns and attendee communications.
  • Media Support: Monitor news coverage; update media lists; assist with news releases and media materials.
  • Brand & Creative Coordination: Create and adapt graphics; organize assets; coordinate with designers, translators, printers, and vendors.
  • Planning & Coordination: Maintain calendars, trackers, content schedules, and approvals to keep deliverables on time.
  • Measurement & Reporting: Track performance across website, email, social, media, and campaigns.
  • General Administrative Support: Maintain files; support scheduling and notes; assist with special projects.

Job description

The Communications Assistant supports the day-to-day delivery of Hotels Canada’s communications across member, advocacy, event, and digital channels. Working closely with the Senior Director, Communications and colleagues across the organization, the Assistant will help to create content, coordinate communications activities, and manage the details that keep projects moving.

This is an entry-level opportunity for a highly organized and creative communicator who is eager to learn and begin building a career in communications. The successful candidate may be a recent graduate or have gained initial experience through co-op placements, internships, summer employment, volunteer roles, or relevant academic projects.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Content Development: Help draft, edit, and proofread newsletters, website copy, social media posts, event promotions, advocacy updates, and other communications materials.
  • Digital Communications: Build and distribute email campaigns; schedule social media content; update website pages; and conduct quality assurance across digital channels.
  • Advocacy & Corporate Communications: Assist with member updates, research releases, presentations, key messages, and communications materials related to Hotels Canadaʼs advocacy priorities.
  • Event Marketing & Support: Help coordinate communications for the annual conference, webinars and member events, including promotional campaigns, online event information and attendee communications, while supporting registration, speaker coordination and overall event delivery.
  • Media Support: Monitor relevant news coverage; update media lists; and assist with news releases, media materials, and interview coordination.
  • Brand & Creative Coordination: Create and adapt graphics using established templates, organize brand and photography assets, and assist with coordinate with coordinating designers, translators, printers, and other vendors.
  • Planning & Coordination: Maintain communications calendars, project trackers, content schedules and approval processes to help keep deliverables on time.
  • Measurement & Reporting: Track website, email, social media, media, and campaign performance and help compile routine communications reports.
  • General Administrative Support: Maintain files and templates; support scheduling and meeting notes; assist with special projects that improve member experience and operational efficiency.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A post-secondary degree or diploma in communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills, with careful attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines; experience with Basecamp or project management tools is an asset.
  • A proactive, curious, and collaborative approach, with a willingness to learn and take on new responsibilities.
  • Familiarity with social media, email marketing, content management systems, or Microsoft 365 gained through employment, co-op placements, internships, volunteer roles, or academic projects.
  • Experience with email marketing platforms, content management systems, social media tools, and Microsoft 365.
  • Familiarity with Canva or similar design tools and an interest in creating effective visual content.
  • Bilingualism in French and English is an asset.
