Job summary

Canada Council for the Arts is seeking a Communications Coordinator to support the Manager, Communications and Engagement, in delivering effective communications initiatives. The role involves advising on objectives, creating internal content, and coordinating media responses to inform stakeholders.

The candidate will monitor media trends, maintain records, and help train staff to enhance internal communications.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in marketing, journalism or communications.
  • Three years of experience in communications and marketing roles.
  • Excellent knowledge of public relations and social media procedures.
  • Strong writing, editing and proofreading skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide advice and support to meet the Canada Council’s communication objectives.
  • Develop and publish internal communications content.
  • Monitor traditional and social media for trends and issues; identify opportunities.
  • Monitor and respond to media inquiries; update media documents and records.
  • Draft responses using templates and maintain filing practices.
  • Develop training plans to build internal communications capacity across the Council.
  • Develop communications content for internal channels (intranet).
  • Analyze data on communications performance and prepare improvement reports.
  • Monitor social media use and propose related recommendations.
  • Provide backup support to the social media Coordinator and communications team.

Job description

Under the direct supervision of the Manager, Communications and Engagement, the Communications Coordinator:

  • provides advice and support to meet the Canada Council’s communication objectives;
  • collaborates within the team and across the Canada Council to develop and publish internal communications content;
  • monitors traditional and social media to identify issues, opportunities and emerging trends;
  • monitors and coordinates centralized media inboxes, including one dedicated to media requests;
  • follows up with the media by telephone or email, as required, and updates traditional and social media documents, protocols and records;
  • ensures that the Communications section’s naming conventions and filing practices are consistently applied and supports team members in organizing and retaining working documents;
  • draft responses using templates;
  • develops training plans, workshops and informal sessions in support of the manager to build internal communications and engagement capacity across the Canada Council;
  • develops Communications section material for internal channels, including the Canada Council’s intranet;
  • helps compile and analyze data relating to the performance of communications and social media activities, and helps prepare reports aimed at continuous improvement;
  • monitors the Canada Council’s use of social media and the impact of social media posts, and develops related recommendations;
  • uses approved digital tools and technology to support communications activities, and serves as a back-up for the social media Coordinator, providing additional communications-related support to the social media coordinator, the communications advisors and the manager on an “as needed” basis;
  • and performs other related duties.
  • Undergraduate degree in marketing, journalism or communications or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience related to the responsibilities of the position.
  • Three (3) years of experience in communications and marketing roles that include social media, issues management and/or internal communications.
  • Excellent knowledge of communications, public relations and social media procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of evolving trends, tools and services that can further develop the Canada Council’s media presence.
  • Solid knowledge of social media platforms and tools such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn.
  • Good understanding of the arts and culture landscape in Canada.
  • Ability to use modern office technology, equipment and software.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced work environment and adapt to multiple, concurrent priorities.
  • Skills in communication, organization, administration, priority-setting and interpersonal relations, combined with good judgment and a strong sense of initiative.
  • Ability to pilot projects and files independently.
  • Excellent writing skills in both English and French.

This position requires the use of both official languages. The requirements in the second official language are:

  • An advanced level reading comprehension (C)
  • An advanced level in writing (C)
  • An advanced level in oral (C)
