Communications and Marketing Specialist, College of Engineering

Summary:

The communications and marketing specialist works closely with the Dean and the College's Communications and Marketing team to advance the College of Engineering's strategic marketing and recruitment priorities. The role leads marketing and recruitment strategy for the College's graduate programs and elevates the profile of the College's signature initiatives, including Sci-Fi Camps, the Co-operative and Graduate and other Programs through compelling branding, storytelling, and integrated marketing campaigns.

The communications and marketing specialist works closely with the dean's office and reports within the college's communications and marketing team, collaborating with program leads, faculty, and staff across the college, as well as central university relations and a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.

The work requires considerable judgment and independent decision‑making in the development, implementation, and evaluation of strategic marketing, branding, and recruitment initiatives that advance the dean's priorities and the college's profile locally, nationally, and internationally. The role demands a proactive, strategic approach to a complex and fast‑paced environment, strong storytelling instincts, and the ability to translate communication into compelling marketing execution across a diverse range of programs and audiences.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Partners with the dean and college leadership to shape and advance strategic communications and marketing priorities that support the college's strategic plan and reputation goals.
  • Leads the development, implementation, and evaluation of strategic marketing and recruitment plans for the college's graduate programs, in alignment with university and college enrollment targets.
  • Elevates the profile of college initiatives, including Sci-Fi Camps, the Co-operative Education Program, and other signature initiatives, through integrated branding, storytelling, and marketing campaigns.
  • Develops compelling content and narratives (written, video, digital, and print) that showcase the college's programs, people, and impact to prospective students and external audiences.
  • Leads and executes marketing projects and campaigns, including digital advertising, email, social media, publications, and event promotion, in support of graduate recruitment and college priorities.
  • Works collaboratively with the college's communications and marketing team and program teams to ensure messaging is consistent, on-brand, and aligned across all college and university channels.
  • Establishes and tracks marketing metrics (KPIs) for graduate recruitment and initiatives, monitoring effectiveness and making data‑informed recommendations.
  • Provides strategic counsel to the dean and college leadership on emerging marketing, branding, and storytelling opportunities and best practices.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with internal partners, external stakeholders, and community partners to support the college's strategic marketing and recruitment goals.
  • Stewards the college's brand and visual identity in alignment with university standards.
  • Communicates and acts in a respectful and professional manner, collaborates effectively, abides by policy, and contributes to a positive and productive work and learning environment.
  • Engages in continuous learning by participating in activities, training, and events related to Indigenous engagement, reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrates respect and dignity for all members of the community, actively contributes to an environment of acceptance and inclusion of others, and responds to different perspectives from a place of curiosity, respect, and non‑judgement.
  • Undertakes related duties, as assigned, consistent with the nature of the position.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing or a related field; a graduate degree is an asset.
  • Minimum five years’ experience in communications or marketing with progression in level of responsibility, including a breadth of experience developing and implementing all areas of strategic communications plans, preferably in a post‑secondary or similar setting.
  • Experience and knowledge of university communications support, processes, and technology is an asset.
  • Advanced knowledge of communication principles.
  • Strong writing skills to effectively communicate to diverse audiences across multiple platforms.
  • Demonstrated client service orientation.
  • Strong problem solving, strategic, and creative thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and meet deadlines on multiple projects with competing demands.
  • Sound judgment and discretionary decision‑making skills.
  • Knowledge, understanding and/or openness to learn about issues (including cultural, socio‑economic and other factors) affecting Indigenous peoples.
  • Ability to identify opportunities and analyze data to inform decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaboratively within a diverse environment and build relationships with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to use and leverage technology effectively.
