Job summary

RBC is seeking a compliance-focused professional to support Equipment Finance by managing commodity tax obligations and regulatory requirements from its Burlington, Canada centre. You will help protect the bank from tax risk while improving governance, reporting, and efficiency across the Lease Operations Centre.

Key duties include reviewing transactions, refining tax processes, and preparing schedules for provincial and federal tax authorities.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years in commodity tax, equipment finance/leasing, and accounting.
  • Ability to interpret tax regulations and legislation.
  • Highly computer literate with MS Office applications.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and oversee sales tax exemptions in the portfolio.
  • Prepare sales tax forms and submissions and assist with audits as needed.

What is the opportunity?

Support RBC Equipment Finance in managing critical commodity tax compliance and regulatory obligations. Protect RBC from material financial loss through accurate tax recording and reporting while driving operational efficiency across the Lease Operations Centre. Play a key role in tax governance and equipment finance compliance.

What will you do?
Commodity Tax
  • Review equipment finance transactions and requested sales tax exemptions to ensure compliance with provincial and federal sales taxes
  • Monitoring and oversight of sales tax exemptions in the equipment finance portfolio
  • Researching and monitoring appropriate federal and provincial sales tax regulations and obligations
  • Communicating sales tax changes and assessing the impact on the business unit
  • Review, refine, and improve operational sales tax processes in collaboration with business unit
  • Compiling and analyzing sales tax data and providing reports to management
  • Preparing appropriate sales tax forms and submissions (e.g. BC Provincial Sales Tax Schedule re: Sale of Boats and Aircraft)
  • Monitoring of compliance related to job aids, processes, procedures, and policies
  • Prepare for and assist with commodity tax audits conducted by the various provincial and federal tax authorities by extracting data from business systems, preparing schedules and reports, and responding to audit queries
  • Work with Senior Manager, Initiatives and Implementation and RBC Commodity Tax team to review and evaluate complex transactions for tax governance and tax accounting with the objective of minimizing tax operational risk and maximizing the return to RBC shareholders
  • Escalate tax compliance issues to Senior Manager, Initiatives & Implementation when impact is greater than delegated authority
Compliance (Operational)
  • Supporting the development, implementation, and management of the Lease Operations Centre’s compliance program
  • Supporting the planning, implementing, and oversight of risk management processes and procedures
  • Maintaining and revising policies and procedures for the general operation of the compliance program and its related activities.
  • Reporting on the results of compliance initiatives of the business unit
  • Implementing corrective action plans for resolution of problematic issues, and providing general guidance on how to avoid or deal with similar situations in the future
  • Conducting and supporting investigative procedures in response to violations of rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
What do you need to succeed?
Must have:
  • 2+ years each in commodity tax, equipment finance/leasing, and accounting
  • Ability to interpret tax regulations and legislation
  • Highly computer literate with MS Office applications
  • Advanced MS Excel including (Pivot Tables, Pivot Charts, Vlookup, IF Statements, etc.)
  • Experience with SAP, Oracle and big data analytics tools
  • Knowledge of and experience with leasing specific GST/HST/QST/PST regulations
  • Strong written and verbal communication
