Posting Summary

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Clinical Veterinarian for the Department of Core Services – Animal Care. As part of the Office for Research, and reporting to the Director of Veterinary Services, implements and maintains animal care standards and policies to maximize University research and teaching programs across a wide range of disciplines.

The Office for Research’s mission is to support the research, scholarship, and creative endeavors of all Rutgers faculty. The Office accomplishes its mission by convening with academic and research leaders, providing integrated, user-focused resources, services, and tools, and partnering with faculty.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Maintains animal care facilities and programs in accordance with public policy and accreditation standards.
  • Provides advice and counsel to the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee ( IACUC ).
  • Oversees clinical activities across multiple vivaria and participates in the training programs (residency, undergraduate courses) conducted by RUAC across campuses.
  • Provides instructional and hands-on training, assist in novel technique development, and will perform clinical and technical services such as providing clinical care to all animals, experimental surgery, and surgical and anesthesia support.
  • Supports or serves as the Registration Coordinator for the Controlled Dangerous Substances Program.
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree from an accredited veterinary school or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two years formal training in laboratory animal medicine or comparable experience.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Veterinary license in at least one state within the USA .
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Completion of a post- DVM training program in the specialty of laboratory animal medicine or equivalent specialized experience.
  • Ability to obtain Federal DEA and New Jersey Controlled Dangerous Substance licenses within six months of hire.
  • Must pass a post-offer, pre-placement medical evaluation to include a medical history and physical examination.
  • Must participate in the occupational health program for animal workers.
  • Per federal regulation, must undergo a criminal background check in order to be able to work with controlled substances.
  • Must have broad knowledge of all aspects of laboratory animal medicine within a university or industrial setting.
  • Must have good interpersonal skills and be able to work tactfully with a wide range of people.
  • Must have full range of body movement.
  • Must have correctable vision to observe animals for signs of illness and evaluate animal rooms and equipment for compliance with applicable standards.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Board certification or eligibility in Laboratory Animal Medicine.
  • Research credentials (MS or PhD).
  • Successful completion of the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.
  • Needs to have familiarity with all equipment used in animal housing, animal maintenance (feeding, watering, and breeding), sanitation of caging and rooms, and environmental monitoring, and be able to train staff in their correct use and maintenance.
  • Equipment includes cagewashers, bottlewashers, autoclaves, large dry heat sterilizers, laminar flow cage change stations, Microisolator and standard caging, ventilated housing racks.
  • Surgical equipment – anesthesia equipment, physiological monitors
  • Thorough working knowledge of Microsoft Office and custom animal care and use management software and other critical software programs such as electronic IACUC systems.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs weight when required in handling or assisting with veterinary care of animals.
  • Employee to walk, stand for several hours when conducting inspections of animal facilities and laboratories.
