Job Summary & Requirements
The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) works with an interprofessional team to provide and enhance advanced care for the TIA/Stroke patient population across the continuum of care, including but not limited to the Emergency Department, Integrated Stroke/Rehabilitation Inpatient Unit, and the Stroke Prevention Clinic.
As part of the Ontario Stroke System, the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) is a designated Enhanced District Stroke Centre for the Central East Stroke Network (CESN). RVH is accountable for providing leadership in the development, implementation, and integration of stroke care throughout the region across all points in the spectrum of stroke care. For example, RVH and the CNS support regional hospitals in identifying gaps and localizing and implementing stroke protocols.
RVH provides an organized, coordinated, and evaluated delivery system that addresses the needs of stroke patients across emergency departments, acute care, rehabilitation, ambulatory care, and the community.
The CNS will perform to the full scope of advanced nursing practice (clinical, administrative, education, and research), blended with initial and future expanded functions in support of program and regional development and evaluation.
Job Requirements
Education:
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing – required
- Master of Science in Nursing – required
- Current registered member in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario – required
- Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) – required
- Current certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) – preferred
- Canadian Nurses Association certification – preferred
- Current certification in Coronary Care 1 – preferred
Experience:
- Minimum of five years of current RN clinical practice experience with demonstrated clinical excellence in area of expertise
- Experience in a leadership role with the ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team
- Demonstrated knowledge of planning, developing, and implementing educational initiatives for healthcare providers and community members
- Demonstrated ability to apply stroke best practices, integrate knowledge, and manage complex stroke cases in various care settings

The CNS must demonstrate the ability:
- To support the delivery of quality care to diverse patient populations and facilitate the development of comprehensive care plans with the interprofessional team to enhance patient safety, outcomes, access to care, and experience
- To blend clinical expertise with education, knowledge translation, leadership, and research skills to serve as a consultant and resource to nurses, nursing leadership, interprofessional teams, and external partners
- To contribute to decision-making, develop clinical guidelines and protocols, promote the use of evidence, and facilitate system changes
- To provide analytical and conceptual skills
- For independent action, initiative, problem-solving, organization, and prioritization
- To apply teaching/learning principles and demonstrate skills in staff and patient education
- To engage with research teams as co-investigators in developing abstracts, presentations, and/or publications
- To be an active member in professional nursing and other professional organizations
- To review and evaluate program development based on current healthcare trends
- To demonstrate knowledge of computer databases, data analysis, and presentation software
