Job summary

Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL) seeks a Clinical Genetics Technologist I to support the Cytogenetic and Molecular Genetic Laboratories at Alberta Children’s Hospital, with potential rotations to the Genome Core facility.

You will perform a range of cytogenetic and molecular tests, analyze results, and contribute to quality control and reporting.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a Bachelor's degree plus advanced diploma in Clinical Genetics.
  • CSMLS certification in Clinical Genetics may be acceptable as an equivalent to an advanced diploma in Clinical Genetics.
  • Experience with cytogenetic processing and ISCN nomenclature; familiarity with CMA, PCR, sequencing and NGS techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and interpret routine and complex genetic testing using molecular and cytogenetic techniques.
  • Enter results into LIS, generate reports, and participate in QC/ proficiency testing.

The Calgary Genetics & Genomics (G&G) team has an exciting opportunity for a Clinical Genetics Technologist I position supporting the Cytogenetic and Molecular Genetic Laboratories located at Alberta Children’s Hospital (home site), with a possibility of rotations through the Genome Core facility at the Arthur J. Child Comprehensive Cancer Center. G&G, as part of Alberta Precision Laboratories (APL), provides complex genetic testing for a broad range of conditions, serving an important role in the provision of genetic services for the province of Alberta. As part of a team, the Clinical Genetics Technologist I will perform a variety of manual and automated procedures proficiently to produce accurate and timely results in the Cytogenetic and/or Molecular Genetic laboratories. Specialized techniques include preparation and culturing of constitutional samples, chromosome analysis, Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH), nucleic acid extraction, DNA quantification, DNA sequencing, chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA), polymerase chain reaction (PCR), Realtime PCR, allelic discrimination, fragment analysis, and next generation sequencing (NGS). The successful candidate is committed to providing quality patient care and has the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment to ensure accurate and timely results.

Description:

As a Clinical Genetics Technologist (CGT) I, you will perform and interpret routine and complex testing for various genetic conditions using molecular and cytogenetic techniques according to established procedures. You will also participate in results entry into the laboratory information system (LIS), report generation, quality control, proficiency testing, lab safety procedures, literature review, test method evaluation, and document writing. Other duties include but are not limited to maintaining lab equipment and supplies, training students and fellows/residents, participating in accreditation activities, and pre-analytical testing processes including accessioning.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of a Bachelor's degree plus advanced diploma in Clinical Genetics.Active or eligible for registration with College of Medical Laboratory Technologists of Alberta (CMLTA).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) certification in Clinical Genetics may be acceptable as an equivalent to an advanced diploma in Clinical Genetics. Experience with human cytogenetic processing and analysis techniques including proper use of ISCN nomenclature and specialized computer imaging platforms for karyotyping and FISH analysis. Experience with appropriate methodology and testing techniques applied in a molecular genetic laboratory, including but not limited to nucleic acid extraction, PCR, genotyping, sequencing as well as analytical software such as GeneMapper, Sequence Analysis, and SeqPilot.Proven critical thinking, analytical, problem solving, planning, and decision making skills. Strong attention to detail as well as superior organizational and time management skills with ability to prioritize work and deliver accurate work under stressful conditions. Demonstrated ability to deal with conflicting and changing priorities, deadlines, and duties. English fluency with exceptional verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Two years of recent experience in a diagnostic genetic laboratory performing cytogenetic and/or molecular genetic testing and interpretation. Experience in next generation sequencing of genomic DNA and application of the ACMG variant interpretation guidelines for germline variants.
