Job description

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. Continuous improvement of quality and safety is inherent in this position.

The dietitian reports to the Coordinator, Nutrition Services, and is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating medical nutritional therapy for hospital-based and/or facility-based patients according to established guidelines. This includes managing nutrition care for patients receiving parenteral nutrition, instructing and counseling patients and families on nutritional requirements, regimes, and food planning, and providing recommendations to the medical team regarding nutrition support, such as enteral vs parenteral nutrition, composition, and supplementation based on current guidelines and best practices. The dietitian also contributes to the development of nutrition practice guidelines, procedures, research, and quality improvement initiatives.

Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience

• Bachelor's degree in dietetics/nutrition or equivalent from a recognized university.
• Completion of an accredited dietetic internship program.
• Current licensure with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC as a Dietitian, including Restricted Activity A & B.
• Two (2) years recent relevant experience in a medical/surgical care setting.
• Certified Nutrition Support Clinician (CNSC) from ASPEN or equivalent.
• Evidence of ongoing professional development.

Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of enteral and parenteral nutrition, feeding tube access, and delivery methods, with the ability to interpret and recommend accordingly.
• Understanding of other health care disciplines and ability to coordinate activities with staff, patients, food services, and support agencies.
• Effective communication skills to establish and maintain work relationships with patients, families, medical team, and community agencies.
• Organizational skills to manage workload, set priorities, and work independently.
• Proficiency in computer applications.
• Knowledge of clinical theory and practice within a client/family-centered care model.
• Understanding of the metabolic basis of nutritional care and standards of practice established by the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC.
• Ability to assess clients with multi-system nutritional problems and respond appropriately.
• Research methodology knowledge.
• Competence in planning, implementing, and adjusting nutrition care plans based on client/family priorities and responses.
