Job summary

GFL Environmental Inc. is seeking a Class 1 Driver based in Sparwood, BC. The role involves visiting client sites, safely collecting and transporting hazardous and non-hazardous waste using flatbed trailers, and ensuring regulatory compliance with TDG and related standards.

The position runs Monday through Friday from Sparwood, BC, requiring a strong safety record, customer service, and teamwork. Candidates should be able to lift 50+ lbs and operate in various weather conditions.

Qualifications

  • Valid Class 1 CDL with a clean abstract.
  • Experience hauling Dry Van and Flatdeck trailers.
  • Ability to operate manual transmission.
  • Experience driving in all weather; chaining up is an asset.
  • Willingness to travel and perform out-of-town work.
  • Forklift or Moffett operating experience is an asset.
  • Physical ability to lift 50+ lbs.
  • Proficient in completing manual paperwork and using mobile apps.
  • Able to pass pre-employment and site drug/alcohol screenings.
  • Safety certifications (First Aid/CPR, CSTS, TDG, H2S Alive) are an asset; in-house training provided.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate all assigned equipment, vehicles, trucks, and trailers.
  • Perform pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections.
  • Promptly report vehicle defects, accidents, or equipment damage to management.
  • Oversee cargo handling and secure loads with equipment such as Moffett.
  • Identify, classify, and handle hazardous waste per safety standards.
  • Complete regulatory paperwork, including manifests and bills of lading.
  • Adhere to TDG, Weights & Dimensions, OH&S, and Hours of Service regulations.
  • Represent GFL professionally at client sites and seek opportunities to expand services.
  • Communicate clearly with customers and team members.
  • Participate in safety meetings, JHAs, and LMRA.
  • Perform additional duties to support operations.

Summary

As a Class 1 Driver, you will play a key role in visiting client sites using flatbed trailers to safely collect and transport hazardous and non-hazardous waste materials. Leveraging your strong safe-driving record and knowledge of Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG), you will assist with container labeling, verify shipping documentation, and ensure full regulatory compliance. We are seeking a dedicated professional who brings a high standard of safety, customer service, and teamwork to our team.

This position is Monday through Friday and will be based out of Sparwood, BC.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  • Safely operate all assigned equipment, vehicles, trucks, and trailers, maneuvering them effectively into tight loading and unloading positions.
  • Perform thorough pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections to ensure all mechanical, safety, and emergency equipment is in optimal working order.
  • Promptly report vehicle defects, accidents, traffic violations, or equipment damage to management.
  • Oversee cargo handling, ensuring all bins and materials are safely loaded, secured, and transported using equipment such as trailer mounted forklift (Moffett).
  • Accurately identify, classify, and handle various types of hazardous waste in accordance with safety standards.
  • Complete and verify regulatory government paperwork, including waste manifests and bills of lading.
  • Strict adherence to all applicable legislation, including Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG), Transport Weights & Dimensions, Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S), and Driver Hours of Service (electronic logbooks).
  • Professionally represent GFL on all client sites, delivering products and documentation in a courteous, timely manner while actively identifying opportunities to expand services.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively—both verbally and in writing—with customers, the general public, and team members.
  • Actively participate in routine safety meetings, Job Hazard Assessments (JHAs), and Last Minute Risk Assessments (LMRAs).
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support overall operations.
Requirements
  • Valid Class 1 Commercial Driver’s License with a clean commercial driving abstract.
  • Proven experience hauling both Dry Van and Flatdeck trailers.
  • Ability to operate manual transmission experience is required.
  • Confident and skilled in driving in all weather conditions, including experience chaining up (asset).
  • Willingness to travel and perform out-of-town work (LOA provided).
  • Forklift or Moffett operating experience is a strong asset.
  • Physical capability to lift 50+ lbs. with good manual dexterity for loading, unloading, and securing cargo.
  • Proficient in completing manual paperwork as well as utilizing mobile apps and computer systems.
  • Ability to successfully pass pre-employment and site-specific drug and alcohol screenings.
  • Safety certifications (First Aid/CPR, CSTS, TDG, H2S Alive) are an asset; in-house training will be provided if needed.

  • Flexibility to work overtime and weekends as operational needs require.
