CHILD/YOUTH WORKER
About The Role
Child Youth Workers (CYW) should possess the personality, ability, and temperament necessary to interact with supported children and youth who have behavioural problems and compulsive behaviours, in a manner that respects and maintains their spirit, dignity, and individuality.
The CYW is responsible for encouraging and empowering the youth to be as independent as possible and to reach their fullest potential while maintaining community standards of care, health, and safety.
Core Responsibilities
- Assist individuals with intellectual impairments, learning disabilities, behavioural problems, and compulsive behaviours.
- Implement behavioural intervention strategies.
- Seek candidates with a trauma-informed approach, demonstrating sensitivity to trauma's impact, utilizing stress-regulation tools, and supporting system change to reduce re-traumatization.
- Familiarity with mental health and wellness topics, including eating disorders.
- Promote holistic well-being in a supportive role.
- Knowledge of resources and strategies for creating an inclusive and supportive environment.
- Relate to children/youth in a caring, positive manner that promotes feelings of personal worth and dignity.
- Focus on developmental potential, acknowledging their rights to self-determination and privacy.
- Ensure dietary needs are met according to strict dietary plans.
- Meet basic needs such as food, clothing, healthcare, and emotional well-being.
- Involve children/youth in decision-making in home and community settings.
- Support personal growth towards self-sufficiency.
- Monitor health needs and assist with self-care, safety, banking, budgeting, and household management.
- Provide role models and maintain confidentiality in communication.
- Encourage community involvement and foster personal relationships.
- Contribute ideas for outings, activities, and social events.
- Accompany children/youth to appointments as needed.
- Assist with planning and purchasing personal needs and teach public transportation use.
- Develop healthy leisure activities of cultural, social, and recreational nature.
- Maintain liaison with families, community agencies, and staff to support contact and involvement.
- Assist in maintaining a tidy home environment, including meal prep and light housekeeping.
- Attend required in-service training and perform other tasks as assigned.
You will have
- Grade 12 education.
- Post-secondary certificate/diploma in community social services/youth services/health care.
- Experience in community social services/youth services/health care, or willingness to learn.
- Experience working with challenging individuals or willingness to be trained.
- Strict dietary management skills.
- Willingness to undergo a Criminal Records Search.
- Current first-aid and CPR certification.
- Unrestricted Class 4 driving license.
- Relevant qualifications or skills as required by licensing or funding bodies.
- Ability to work effectively in a team and shift work.
- Experience in planning and implementing programs.
- Effective communication skills with staff, professionals, and families.
- Previous behaviour management training.
