Job description

Venor is proud to partner with the Port of Corner Brook in the search for a Chief Executive Officer. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) reports directly to the Board of Directors and is responsible for providing strategic direction and creating a vision for success. The ideal candidate will be a prudent manager and an inspiring leader with a business mindset and the ability to see the “big picture” in a variety of settings. The CEO supervises and controls all strategic and business aspects of the company, takes action to strengthen financial sustainability, drive the port’s development and to foster economic development in the region.

What You’ll Be Doing:
  • Ensure the development and implementation of the Port’s strategic plan to achieve the strategic priorities and goals of the organization
  • Oversee the management of port business including finances, human resources, investments, marketing, operations and real estate to ensure the desired results are consistent with the overall strategy and mission
  • Develop and maintain strategic partnerships to ensure effective business development and long term financial sustainability.
  • Build relationships with external stakeholders, government, business and community partners to advance the strategic goals and mission.
  • Oversee the financial sustainability of the port including investment and cash flow management and identifying external funding opportunities through infrastructure programs and project partners.
  • Prepare an annual budget for the approval of the Board of Directors, recommend tariff rates, maintain fiscal adherence to the budget and seek board approval for significant cost issues outside of the approved budget
  • Ensure commitment to the corporation’s core values are embedded in the culture of daily operations, relationship building and policy development.
  • Lead and motivate staff to advance employee engagement and to develop and mentor a high performing management team.
  • Develop the port’s infrastructure, facilities and services to meet the long-term needs of clients and stakeholders and strengthen financial sustainability.
  • Provide for the safety and security of the Port’s personnel, assets and other facilities including regular drills and exercises of the Marine Security and Emergency Response plans with appropriate awareness of risk assessment.
  • Maintain accountability through the Board of Directors providing detailed reports on ongoing business activity and financial reporting; ensure adequate information is provided to the board to facilitate informed decision making and appropriate governance; seek the board’s guidance, insight and approval for the corporation’s strategic direction, annual budget, tariff rates, and emerging issues and projects.
What We’re Looking For:
  • Proven experience as CEO or in other high level managerial position
  • Prior experience within the Maritime sector would be an asset
  • Experience in developing strategic plans and implementing actions to achieve vision
  • Strong understanding of corporate finance and performance management principles
  • In-depth knowledge of corporate governance, policy development and management best practices
  • An entrepreneurial mindset with outstanding organizational, leadership and negotiating skills
  • Analytical abilities and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and prioritize issues and exercise strong decision-making skills
  • Excellent communication and public speaking skills
  • Professional designation or masters-level education in business administration, engineering, accounting, strategic planning or relevant field, or a combination of equivalent education and experience.
