Qualifications

  • Unrestricted registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario required.
  • Minimum 2 years recent clinical experience in charge nursing or geriatrics.
  • CPR and First Aid certification needed.

The assigned Charge Registered Nurse works under the direction of the Director of Care and/or Assistant Director of Care to co-ordinate the delivery of quality, person-centered care on assigned Resident Home Areas. The Charge RN is a clinical nursing expert, nursing team leader and educator for residents and members of the nursing care team. The Charge RN supports the efficient operation of the Home through continuous quality improvement to meet the care needs of residents. Duties are discharged in a manner that is consistent with the mission, vision and values of Providence Care Centre and the professional requirements and practice standards of the College of Nurses of Ontario.

Skills And Qualifications Required

  • Unrestricted registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Minimum educational requirement is an RN diploma; BScN preferred
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification
  • Certification in gerontological nursing preferred, as is training in Gentle Persuasive Approach and similar programs.
  • Prior work experience and training in dementia care and palliative care preferred
  • Prior work or practicum experience in a Long-term care Home
  • Two years' recent and related clinical experience, preferably in a charge role in long-term care or geriatrics

Position Responsibilities

  • The Charge RN, when working any shift, when the DOC and ADOC are not present, after hours, weekends or holidays, is responsible for;
    • the oversight of activities on ALL Resident Home Areas
    • for ensuring that shift-specific tasks are carried out by nursing-department personnel
    • is responsible for the safety and well-being of all residents, visitors, and staff on duty in all departments
  • Acts as a resource to the Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses, Health Care Aides, and Personal Support Workers in the performance of their duties
  • Provides leadership in the promotion of person-centered care in the Home
  • Promotes Resident's Bill of Rights and advocates for residents
  • Communicates regularly with residents, family members, POAs and members of the resident's inter-professional care team.
  • Supports a caring environment, promotes resident and family involvement in care planning
  • Works with the inter-professional team in the development and revision of care plans for residents.
  • Ensures the daily personal needs of residents are met with careful regard to the dignity of the resident, in accordance with the Residents' Bill of Rights
  • Provides front-line clinical nursing expertise in all aspects of care delivery on the assigned Resident Home Areas.
  • Provides coaching, mentoring and/or corrective instruction for members of the nursing department care team,
  • Assists with the delivery of direct care, including the administration of medications to residents as required.
