Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist

This position offers a pay range of CA$41.85/hr - CA$51.77/hr, based on skills and experience. Your actual salary will be discussed with your recruiter.

Position Summary

The Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist evaluates, plans, and delivers care in the Ophthalmology Department, aligning with CHEO's mission, values, policies, standards, and procedures. Operating independently under medical guidance, they collaborate with healthcare team members, manage responsibilities autonomously, and advocate for patient care within the Ophthalmology Clinic and Diagnostic Areas.

Job Responsibilities
  • Take retinal photographs using a fundus camera and external photographs of the face and eye.
  • Perform fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography.
  • Perform various photography functions, including external, anterior segment, posterior segment, OR photography, digital imaging, videography, etc.
  • Set up, operate, and maintain diagnostic equipment.
  • Perform automated and Goldmann perimetry, including patient instruction and data collection.
  • Conduct electrophysiology tests (ERG, EOG, VEP) with proper calibration and data collection.
  • Perform color vision testing, keratometry, refraction, and ocular coherence tomography.
  • Troubleshoot diagnostic equipment issues.
Patient Care and Coordination
  • Prepare exam data for physician interpretation.
  • Maintain confidentiality of patient and staff records.
  • Provide direct patient care.
  • Handle administrative tasks, manage communication channels.
Qualifications
  • Vulnerable Sector Check (Level 3) and compliance.
  • Degree from a recognized ophthalmic technologist training program.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist Designation – JCAHPO.
  • Knowledge of ophthalmic anatomy, diagnostics, and pediatric disorders.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication skills, and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ophthalmic Ultrasound (B-scan) experience.
  • Recent ophthalmology COMT work experience.
  • Bilingual in English and French.
