Job summary

The Salvation Army International in Abbotsford, BC, is seeking a Cook for a casual/on-call role with weekend availability. The Cook will prepare nutritious meals according to menus and food safety regulations in a ministry kitchen.

You will adapt practices to meet dietary needs, manage supplies, and supervise volunteers when needed, while upholding safety standards and serving residents and clients with dignity and respect.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma required; Cook’s papers or similar training preferred.
  • Up to six months of specialized courses (Cook’s papers, 1 year course).
  • Experience in institutional cooking is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares meals; may prepare for special dietary needs of the residents
  • Adapts work practices within specific parameters to ensure the efficient delivery of food services
  • Makes use of and decides on best use of resources, including donations to minimize waste
  • Follows guidelines for the safety and security of food and equipment and monitors practices to ensure adherence
  • May perform some employee supervisory duties in the absence of the Food Services Manager
  • May supervise students, volunteers and/or residents in work therapy
  • Orders food supplies
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Position Summary

The Cook prepares and serves nutritious meals as outlined on menus in accordance with applicable food service and safety regulations. This is a casual/on‑call position with weekend availability.

Responsibilities
  • Prepares meals; may prepare for special dietary needs of the residents
  • Adapts work practices within specific parameters to ensure the efficient delivery of food services
  • Makes use of and decides on best use of resources, including donations to minimize waste
  • Follows guidelines for the safety and security of food and equipment and monitors practices to ensure adherence

Education & Qualifications
  • High School diploma plus up to six months of specialized courses (Cook’s papers, 1 year course)
  • One to three years of prior related experience, with at least one year of institutional cooking experience
  • Ability and willingness to undergo background checks satisfactory to The Salvation Army, including The Salvation Army Abuse Registry screening
Physical & Functional Requirements

Job requires frequent standing, moderate lifting, cutting, chopping, carrying supplies and walking. Must be able to lift more than 20 pounds and maintain frequent attention to food preparation, reading recipes, and adhering to safety procedures.

Financial Resources Responsibility

Involved in minor financial matters, authorized to spend or disburse small amounts of cash. Provides wise use of own resources. Minimal input into the annual budget.

Human Resources Responsibility

Responsible for directing and checking results, working with those supervised.

Work Environment

Kitchen in a ministry unit/social services facility. Conditions include dealing with angry people, verbal abuse, hot/steamy environment, noise, crowding, pressure, cuts, burns, freezers. Travel up to 30% of the time.

  • Moving objects, sharp objects, electrical hazards, injury from lifting, falling on wet/slippery floors, cuts, burns, freezers
  • Universal Precautions, use of rubber mats, coats for freezers, gloves, Hepatitis B vaccination, TB vaccination
Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $20.60 to $20.71 per hour, with a maximum of $20.81. Salary based on market conditions and experience.
