Position Summary... The Pharmacy Assistant assists the Pharmacist in the technical aspects of prescription filling and administrative duties to support patient care. The Pharmacy Assistant is expected to participate in all aspects of Pharmacy Operations required of a team player and plays a key role in delivering superior customer service.
What you'll do...
- Receive prescriptions from patients, ensuring compliance with provincial legal/regulatory conditions, and assess for completeness (Name, Address, DOB, Allergies, 3rd Party info, Special Requests, Prescriber, Generic/Brand, Prioritization according to 21st Century Guidelines).
- Perform computer functions as directed by the Pharmacist, including data entry, price checks, patient information updates, interpreting prescriptions (Latin abbreviations, drug recognition, dosage calculations), refills, report generation, and profile checks.
- Fill prescriptions under Pharmacist supervision, selecting appropriate products, conducting accuracy checks (7-point, visual, DIN), preparing products, labeling, organizing for pharmacist review, obtaining approvals for verbal refills as authorized, using 'STOP' forms if applicable, and facilitating Cognitive Services.
- Maintain inventory control by assisting in stock management, checking for expired medications monthly, managing 'stale' prescriptions, processing returns, ordering drugs and supplies (preferably through Kohl and Frisch), operating the Telxon gun, checking and pricing orders, organizing shelves, and maintaining drug knowledge and key brands/preferred generics.
- Perform general housekeeping, stock supplies, keep the dispensary clean and organized, maintain a safe work environment, and clean/maintain equipment and technology.
- Handle clerical organization, including filing prescriptions, invoices, reports, correspondence, and memos, and support administrative functions like journal entries and accounts receivable.
- Assist with OTC operations, including ordering, stocking, and cashier duties as assigned by the OTC Manager or Pharmacist.
