Reporting to the Assistant General Counsel, this is an exciting opportunity to work as a strategic partner with the business on a broad range of challenging commercial & regulatory matters. The ideal candidate will have at least 7 - 10 years of corporate / commercial experience at an in-house legal department and / or a leading law firm. This is a great opportunity for someone who is curious, adaptable and confident, and would like to build expertise advising on a wide variety of matters and leading complex transactions.

What you'll do...

Responsibilities include :

  • Supporting exciting growth initiatives across a number of cross-functional business units, including financial services, ecommerce, transportation, technology and marketing
  • Leading the negotiation of strategic commercial transactions for multiple business units
  • Advising in complex regulatory areas such as financial services, consumer protection and privacy
  • Identifying risks and managing potential legal and regulatory issues and partnering cross-functionally with the necessary business units to identify and implement appropriate solutions
  • Educating and training on legal requirements within the business, in partnership with business stakeholders
  • Effectively managing external counsel across Canada where engaged
  • Identifying and implementing efficient ways of working both within and outside the legal department

Qualifications :

  • Minimum of 7 to10 years of corporate / regulatory experience at an in-house legal department and / or leading law firm.
  • LLB or JD
  • Excellent drafting and negotiation skills, as well as the ability to lead complex transactions and communicate practical legal advice to all levels of the company including senior management, are essential.
  • Experience working on financial services, consumer protection and privacy / data governance matters would be an asset.
  • Strong business acumen, sound judgement and interpersonal skills are important as you will have extensive interaction with various business groups.
