The Role

GrizzlyTrek is seeking one HPU Commissioning Operator to join our value-added client's team in Sherwood Park, Alberta. This is a full-time, hourly contract position running September 14, 2026 to September 13, 2027, supporting the commissioning and startup of the Hydrogen Production Unit (HPU) at a world-scale net-zero hydrogen energy complex.

The complex is one of the largest energy transition projects in Canada. It combines auto-thermal reforming (ATR) hydrogen production with carbon capture of roughly 95 percent of CO2 for permanent underground sequestration, Western Canada's only liquid hydrogen production facility, and a 100 percent hydrogen-fueled power generation unit capable of exporting clean power to the Alberta grid. The site ties into an existing regional hydrogen pipeline network in the Alberta Industrial Heartland and is positioned to make the Edmonton region the centre of Western Canada's hydrogen economy. With construction winding down, the project is now moving into commissioning, startup, and early operations. That is where this role lives.

Reporting to the HPU Commissioning Coordinator, you will oversee the initial startup, testing, and stabilization of the HPU, ensuring all equipment is safely energized, tested, and brought to full production capacity in compliance with site safety standards. The work is hands‑on and field based: managing vendors and subcontractors, troubleshooting equipment, verifying system performance against design specifications, and training the permanent Operations team.

Your First Three Months
  • Get up to speed quickly: work with the Commissioning Coordinator to understand the commissioning and startup plans for the HPU, including System Commissioning Packages and procedures
  • Complete the CSU Operator Training Material and Competency Validation for the HPU
  • Complete the site's Safety Work Permit (SWP) training. The training is extensive, but the principles align with other Alberta industrial sites
What You'll Do
  • Support Construction Complete (CC) and Mechanically Complete (MC) walkdowns
  • Install energy isolations and issue Safety Work Permits (SWPs) as required
  • Execute commissioning and startup procedures for the Hydrogen Production Unit
  • Follow direction from the HPU CSU Coordinator and provide daily progress reports
  • Redline Operations Site Work Instruction Manuals (SWIMs, also known as Operating Procedures) as systems come online
  • Support and manage vendors and contractors while they are on site, monitoring their progress
  • Troubleshoot equipment and verify system performance against design specifications
  • Share CSU experience, opinions, and knowledge. Teach and mentor less experienced members of the team
  • Support the training of the permanent Operations personnel
What You Bring
  • Power Engineer certification, 4th Class minimum
  • Minimum 3 to 5 years of hands‑on operator experience in hydrogen production units (SMR, ATR, or gasification)
  • Valid safety certifications: CSTS-20, Basic Scaffold Safety, Fall Protection, Confined Space Entry and Monitoring, WHMIS, H2S Alive
  • Safety focused: you view safety as a personal value
  • Adaptable: able to change and adapt to dynamic work environments with ease
  • Collaborative: works with all team members toward a common goal and puts team before self
  • Technical: able to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve potential problems
  • Organized: able to strategize and build plans to meet objectives, goals, and deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in a project commissioning or startup role
  • Strong understanding of hydrogen production processes (SMR, ATR, gasification), CO shift units, gas compression (H2, CO2), and amine CO2 scrubbing
  • Oxygen awareness: knowledge of the protocols and the criticality of cleanliness when working on high-pressure pure oxygen systems
  • Proficiency with Office applications; Smart Plant Review and Bluebeam Revu are an asset
Work Environment
  • Project field based at an active construction and commissioning site in the Edmonton region's industrial corridor
  • Significant hands‑on field activity around energized equipment, rotating machinery, and high pressure gas systems, including oxygen service
  • Working alongside vendors, subcontractors, and a multi-discipline CSU team through system turnover, startup, and stabilization
  • 40 hours per week, with overtime possible during peak commissioning and startup windows
  • Local hiring strategy: candidates should be based in the Edmonton and Sherwood Park area. Per diem and living out allowance are not provided
What We Offer
  • Competitive compensation based on experience and qualifications
  • Opportunities for overtime based on operational requirements
  • Life insurance: $100,000 employee / $10,000 spouse / $5,000 per child
