Job summary

Responsibilities

• Clean heritage facilities including offices, storage, kitchens, washrooms, and common areas.
• Ensure facilities are clean and safe for public and staff use; sweep, mop, dust, vacuum, and wipe surfaces.
• Empty interior garbage and recycling bins.
• Set up/down program and rental equipment for events; provide site access as needed.
• Assist with site maintenance and pest control in consultation with supervisor.
• Complete daily/weekly checklists and report maintenance issues.

Job description

Overview

Successful candidates will be required to perform work in the cleaning and minor maintenance of City heritage buildings. Locations will alternate between Britannia Shipyards National Historic Site; Steveston Tram; Steveston Museum and Post Office; Japanese Canadian Museum, London Farm and other Museum and Heritage sites as needed, in support of a superior visitor experience. The BSW performs routine cleaning activities and minor site upkeep and aids with rentals and events when required. Once per year, the BSW performs a deep clean of London Farmhouse in advance of its season opening.

The scope of duties is subject to high and low season needs at these public sites.

Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Cleaning of, but not limited to, heritage facilities including office spaces, storage rooms, kitchen/lunch rooms, washrooms, common areas, rental spaces, display areas, exterior perimeter of buildings and boardwalk.
• Ensuring facilities are clean and safe for public and staff use, including sweeping, mopping, dusting and vacuuming (depending on the building) including floors in kitchens and bathrooms. Cleaning windows (within reach), door handles and wheelchair access buttons.
• Emptying of interior garbage cans and recycling bins.
• Setting up and taking down of program and rental equipment such as, but not limited to, folding tables, chairs, and portable A/V equipment. Helping set up for events and meetings including providing access to site(s) for meetings as needed.
• Clearing leaves from boardwalks and other pathways during fall and winter seasons.
• Occasionally liaisingwith external contractors and/or trades workers.
• Maintaining effective oral and written communications.
• Completing and submitting daily/weekly checklists.
• Operating and maintaining powered cleaning equipment.
• Assisting with pest control measures in consultation with Visitor Services Coordinator.
• Completing inventory, ordering and distributing of supplies at all three facilities.
• Identifying maintenance problems and reporting work required (monitoring leaking roofs when raining).
• Completing minor maintenance(changing light bulbs, unclogging toilets, etc.).
• Opening and closing of facilities if required.
• Annual Deep Cleaning at London Farm
• Performing other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, tools and equipment used in janitorial work.
• Knowledge of routine building and equipment maintenance, and minor repair tasks.
• Knowledge of janitorial workplace hazards and safe practices.
• Knowledge of and ability to provide excellent customer service.
• Knowledge of and familiarity with a computerized maintenance management system is an asset.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to deal courteously and effectively with co-workers and the public.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Must successfully clear a Police Information Check.

Qualifications and Experience:

• Completion of Grade 12 plus successful completion of a recognized Building Service Worker course, plus a minimum of one-year experience in janitorial work is required. Experience and knowledge of working in a Museum and Heritage site is an asset
• Building Service Worker Certificate.
• WHMIS Certificate.
• Valid Class 5 Driver's Licence for the Province of British Columbia.
  

Working Conditions:

• Regular exposure to dirt, dust, and mould.
• Routine light and heavy physical effort and capability required to carry out duties, including lifting of heavy objects and other various articles/items
• Often working independently outside of public hours.
• Duties are performed both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Work during Richmond Maritime Festival.
