Job summary

The City of Kamloops is seeking a permanent, full-time Building Official III to join our Development, Engineering and Sustainability (DES) team. You will review building plans, issue permits, perform site inspections and ensure compliance with the BC Building Code and city by-laws.

The successful candidate will work with internal departments, developers and contractors, share technical guidance, and contribute to Kamloops’ growing infrastructure.

Qualifications

• Completion of secondary school or equivalent.
• Valid BC Driver’s Licence - Class 5.
• BC Trade Qualification or interprovincial carpentry ticket and/or graduation from a recognized building technology course.
• Level III certification with the Building Officials Association of BC.

Responsibilities

• Review building plans and approve permits.
• Perform site inspections.
• Enforce BC Building Code and city bylaws.
• Provide professional guidance to internal departments, developers, owners and contractors.

Position Overview

The City of Kamloops is seeking a highly skilled permanent, full-time Building Official III to join our dedicated Development, Engineering, and Sustainability (DES) team. This is an opportunity to have a direct impact on the growth and innovation in Kamloops’ infrastructure.

As a Building Official III, you will play a pivotal role in review and approval of building permits, site inspections, enforcement of BC’s Building Code, City bylaws and much more! This highly technical position interacts with and provides professional guidance to many internal departments, developers, owners, contractors and other external agencies.

Please note, this Building Official III posting coincides with postings Building Official I (2032) and Building Official II (2036). Our preference is to hire a fully qualified Building Official III. However, if there are no candidates deemed fully qualified, candidates for the Building Official II and Building Official I postings will be considered.

For new hires, and for those working in designated positions of trust, including those working directly with vulnerable persons, no formal offer of employment will be made until an applicant completes a police information check. A comprehensive benefits package is included with this position.

This is a unionized position with CUPE Local 900; check out our Collective Agreement (2024 - 2025) for full details (ratified 2026 Collective Agreement coming soon). As this is a unionized position, all qualifications must be met in order to be shortlisted for the position.

Hours & Days of Work

Monday – Friday 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM

OR

Modified Schedule 7:30 AM – 4:30 PM (day off every third week)
