The City of Burnaby is seeking a Building Inspector 2 to conduct inspections of commercial and industrial projects to ensure compliance with building codes and regulations. This position requires a diploma in Building Technology and relevant experience, offering a competitive salary and the opportunity to contribute to community safety and development.

Salary: $6,200 – 6,460 – 6,730 – 7,011 – 7,319/month (2024 Rates)
Schedule: 70 hours bi-weekly; Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM – 4:45 PM (Nine-Day Fortnight)

This position works in the Building Inspection organizational unit. This is intermediate level building inspectional and regulatory work. An incumbent inspects less complex commercial and industrial projects as frequently as necessary during the course of construction, alteration and repair to determine conformity with approved plans and applicable sections of Building, Zoning and Sign by-laws and the B.C. Building Code and other regulations; approves or rejects inspected work; performs inspections outlined in the Building Inspector 1 class specification with respect to single and two family dwellings, accessory buildings, landscaping, complaints, demolitions, safety considerations; discusses construction, alteration and repair matters with contractor, property owners and other interested parties; explains building by-law requirements; advises owners, contractors and tradespersons of changes or corrections required and checks to ensure that deficiencies are corrected; ensures that builder has obtained the various service and utility inspections and clearances required before passing building for framing and occupancy; surveys fire damaged buildings prior to repair; prepares reports on inspections and issues inspection notices when required standards have been satisfied. Performs related work as required.
Qualifications include high school graduation supplemented by completion of a recognized carpentry trade apprenticeship and/or graduation from an Institute of Technology with a Diploma in Building Technology, plus sound experience as a Plan Checker 2 and/or Building Inspector 1; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Considerable knowledge of the standards, codes, by-laws, acts and regulations related to the work. Ability to interpret and enforce by-laws, regulations, plans and specifications impartially and tactfully; recognize faulty construction or hazardous conditions pertaining to structural stability of small industrial, commercial and residential construction; operate office equipment and computer applications (e.g. Word, Excel, Geographic Information System, Energov Permitting and Land Management System). Skill in the use of a variety of tools and equipment related to the work performed. A successful completion of the Building Officials Association of BC (BOABC) Level 2 Exam(s) and a valid Driver's Licence for the Province of British Columbia are required.
