Qualifications

GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITY:
The Brachytherapy Nurse Lead is a specialized Registered Nurse (RN) who plays a critical role in the coordination, planning, assessment, and delivery of brachytherapy services for oncology patients. The Brachytherapy Nurse Lead provides development initiatives and leadership in all spheres of nursing: clinical, practice, education, research, and quality improvement. Working collaboratively with radiation oncologists, medical physicists, and multidisciplinary care teams, the Brachytherapy Nurse Lead ensures that patients receive high-quality, patient-centered care throughout the brachytherapy treatment process through continuous and consistent evaluation of the nursing services provided.

This position reports to the Manager of Systemic Therapy.

The Brachytherapy Nurse Lead is responsible for providing holistic cancer care to patients over the spectrum of the oncology experience: assessment, intervention, treatment administration and follow-up in the ambulatory setting. The Brachytherapy Nurse Lead will participate in patient/family education, make pertinent nursing assessments, collaborate with the multidisciplinary care team and provide appropriate interventions.

In consultation with the respective manager, the individual is responsible for assessing learning needs of staff, developing, planning, implementing and evaluating designated educational activities/programs including a structured peri-operative operating and recovery course for registered nurses working within brachytherapy. The role is responsible for strategic planning and prioritizing of educational needs within an approved annual budget. This includes assessing current program requirements, allocating resources effectively to maximize educational impact, and ensuring expenditures align with organizational goals. The role also projects future budget requirements by analyzing trends, anticipating program enhancements, and accounting for ongoing operational costs, supporting sustainable growth and continuous improvement of educational offerings. The Brachytherapy Nurse Lead will use a consultative approach and research findings to provide support to healthcare professionals as appropriate.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education

• Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Nursing
• Completion of the Oncology nursing certification CON(C) is an asset
• Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
• If no fully qualified applicants are found, consideration of those without brachytherapy experience will be considered.

Experience

• Five (5) years brachytherapy nursing experience.
• Graduate of an advanced nursing specialty program in operating room or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Membership

• Licensed with the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS)
• Membership in the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO) an asset
• Membership in Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) an asset

Knowledge & Skills

• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with multiple diverse stakeholders at all levels of responsibility both within the SCA and externally.
• Demonstrated ability to provide person-centered, trauma informed, culturally safe nursing support.
• Advanced patient assessment skills, virtually and in person, with the ability to complete initial and ongoing patient assessments (clinical and diagnostic reasoning) and provide high quality patient support through appropriate/prescribed technical, therapeutic and safety interventions.
• Demonstrated ability to monitor sedated patients and perform necessary checks.
• Understands the nursing process and principles of adult learning.
• Demonstrated skill in teaching staff.
• Ability to interpret detailed information and communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Communication skills are required to develop and present complex information including written documentation and verbal presentations.
• Initiative and independent judgment required to solve complex problems
• Ability to integrate relevant evidence-based best practice as standard performance.
• Ability to effectively analyze information, problems, situations, practices or procedures.
• Ability to teach and present information effectively to persons over whom the incumbent may have no direct authority.
• Requires high-level skills in human relations to develop formal and trusted relationships with patients to navigate them effectively within the provincial health system and provide in-depth counselling and support.
• Demonstrated leadership skills required to lead Agency projects/committees.
• Ability to manage, prioritize and troubleshoot multiple tasks in various stages of completion.
• Ability to implement change and evaluate program, practice/direction.
• Competent in the use of computers and Microsoft applications.
