2171 - Board of Directors - Board Member

Volunteer MBC Board Members provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance on behalf of its members. While day-to-day operations are led by the Executive Director, the Board-Executive Director relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected at the Committee level. The Board will support the efforts of Volunteer MBC to fuel purposeful connections between people to respond to the most pressing social issues in the Peel community with a vision of improving lives through volunteerism.

Description

Provide strategic leadership by setting the mission, vision, and values of Volunteer MBC by undertaking strategic planning to meet community needs.

  • Serve as a trusted Advisor to the Executive Director as they implement the Strategic Plan.
  • Provide oversight and ensure that Volunteer MBC is managed in accordance with principles of sound financial and risk management. This includes approval of annual budget and audit reports and meeting all legal and fiduciary responsibilities.
  • Assist the Board President and Executive Director in identifying and recruiting other Board Members as needed.
  • Follow policies and procedures and periodically review those for Volunteer MBC, which incorporate its values and guide its decisions.
  • Ensure Volunteer MBC’s commitment to a diverse and inclusive board/staff and volunteer team that reflects the communities it serves.
  • Attend all board meetings and AGM, having read, and reviewed all relevant board materials beforehand.
  • Adhere to Roberts Rules of Order at meetings.
  • Select the Executive Director and approve his/her performance in achieving Volunteer MBC’s strategic directions, meeting business priorities.
  • Represent Volunteer MBC to stakeholders, acting as an ambassador and advocate.
  • Serve on a minimum of one Committee of the Board.
  • Board Directors will consider Volunteer MBC a philanthropic priority and make an annual gift that is commensurate with their capacity so that Volunteer MBC can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, corporations, and individuals, based on demonstrating 100% Board commitment.
  • Recognizing that Volunteer MBC is a charitable organization, board members should also make a solid effort to introduce Volunteer MBC to their network and fully support us in soliciting contributions from sponsors, donors, and funders.
  • Professional development/orientation and staff support is provided.
  • Gain expertise on salient issues such as community development, education, volunteerism challenges that impact clients and members of Volunteer MBC.

Qualifications
  • Prior experience in Board Director leadership or other community leadership roles.
  • Governance/board experience, professional experience, education and/or training in one of these areas: social services, fund development, human resources, legal, finance, strategic leadership, project management, business management.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for improving lives through volunteerism and building community capacity.
  • Executive skills as identified in Volunteer MBC’s board matrix, such as; Accounting/finance/audit, governance, human resources, legal, risk management, strategic & project planning, fund development, marketing & communications and IT systems.
  • Understanding of the not-for-profit sector.
  • Savvy diplomatic skills and natural affinity for cultivating relationships and persuading, convening, facilitating, and building consensus among diverse individuals.

Time Commitment

This is a Long Term (More than 6 months) commitment starting 2024-05-01

  • Shifts are available Anytime.
  • 8 hours per month. Approximately 1 board meeting plus board/committee work between meetings. (We hold a minimum of 6 board meetings a year).
  • Must sit or chair one of the Standing Board Committees, Fund Development Committee, Finance Committee, Governance/Nominating Committee & HR Committee or Social Inclusion Committee.
  • Absence from 2 or more board meetings without consent from the Board President may be grounds for dismissal.
  • Attendance at special events is expected.
  • Directors will be elected for a two (2) year term, for a maximum of three (3) terms (or six 6 years).
Training
  • Orientation to Volunteer MBC will be provided during the onboarding and ongoing.
  • Access to free professional development via Volunteer MBC’s Learning Centre.
  • This position reports to the Board President.

Service on Volunteer MBC’s Board of Directors is without remuneration.
