As a member of the military, Biomedical Electronics Technologists provide technical maintenance and repair support for medical and dental equipment used in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). As part of the Health Services team, they ensure the accurate performance of medical devices using electronic instrumentation and workshop tools.
The primary responsibility is to maintain medical equipment according to Canadian Standards Association and manufacturer specifications. This includes devices such as:
Biomedical Electronics Technologists may work in regional repair facilities, at Canadian Field Hospitals, or in surgical centres across Canada or internationally. They may also perform repairs onboard ships, requiring regular visits to medical establishments within the CAF.
The minimum education requirement is a Diploma of Technology in Biomedical Engineering from an accredited Canadian institution, with at least six months of relevant work experience in the past two years. Recent graduates within 12 months are also eligible without work experience.

The initial training includes Basic Military Qualification at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, followed by one year of on-the-job training under a senior Technologist. Opportunities for specialized training in areas like Technical Administration and Management are available.
Reserve Force members receive the same training as Regular Force members and may serve part-time or full-time, with compensation and benefits comparable to full-time personnel.
