Job summary

Canopy Growth is seeking a bilingual Payroll Specialist to join our Ottawa team. You will manage payroll for 600+ employees across multiple locations, ensuring timely processing, accuracy, and compliance with federal and provincial legislation.

Collaborating with HR and Finance, you will handle inquiries, support year-end reporting and system enhancements, and maintain confidential employee information. A post-secondary degree, English and French bilingualism, plus 2–5 years of high-volume

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Payroll Administration, or related field.
  • Bilingual English/French required.
  • 2–5 years of payroll processing in a high-volume environment.
  • Experience with Canadian payroll; US payroll is an asset.
  • Experience with Workday or other HRIS/payroll systems is an asset.
  • PCP designation preferred; candidate may be working toward certification.

Responsibilities

  • Process payroll for 600+ employees across multiple locations and shifts.
  • Review, verify and enter payroll data including hires, terminations, raises, overtime and bonuses.
  • Monitor timesheets and payroll transactions for accuracy.
  • Ensure compliance with federal and provincial payroll legislation and standards.
  • Assist year-end activities including T4s, T4As, ROEs and other reporting.
  • Support payroll system updates and process improvements.
  • Respond to payroll inquiries with professional and timely service.
  • Maintain payroll procedures and documentation.

The Opportunity

The Bilingual Payroll Specialist, reporting to the Payroll Manager, is responsible for the accurate and timely processing of payroll for over 600 employees across multiple locations and shifts. This role supports the full-cycle payroll process, including maintaining employee payroll records, processing payroll transactions, monitoring payroll data accuracy, ensuring compliance with applicable federal and provincial payroll legislation, and assisting with year-end reporting and statutory filing requirements. The Payroll Specialist partners closely with Human Resources, Finance, managers, and employees to resolve payroll inquiries, support payroll-related projects and system enhancements, and deliver a high standard of customer service while maintaining the confidentiality of sensitive employee information.

Responsibilities
  • Process accurate and timely payroll for over 600 employees across multiple locations and shifts in accordance with established payroll schedules.
  • Review, verify, and enter payroll data, including new hires, terminations, salary changes, promotions, overtime, bonuses, taxable benefits, leaves of absence, and payroll adjustments.
  • Monitor timesheets and payroll transactions to identify discrepancies and ensure payroll data is complete and accurate.
  • Interpret and apply federal and provincial payroll legislation, employment standards, company policies, and payroll procedures to ensure compliance with legislative requirements.
  • Assist with payroll year-end activities, including the preparation and reconciliation of T4s, T4As, RL-1s, Records of Employment (ROEs), and other statutory reporting as required.
  • Assist in the preparation, reconciliation, and submission of Workers' Compensation reports and Employer Health Tax (EHT) filings across multiple Canadian jurisdictions, ensuring compliance with applicable legislative requirements and reporting deadlines.
  • Support payroll system updates, testing, and continuous improvement initiatives by participating in payroll-related projects and process enhancements.
  • Assist in maintaining payroll procedures and documentation to support consistency and compliance.
  • Collaborate with Human Resources, Finance, managers, and employees to research and resolve payroll inquiries and discrepancies in a timely and professional manner.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by responding to payroll-related inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
  • Other duties and special projects, as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Working knowledge of Canadian payroll legislation, CRA requirements, provincial employment standards, and multi-jurisdictional payroll requirements across Canadian provinces.
  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, particularly Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize competing deadlines and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong customer service orientation with the ability to work collaboratively across departments.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion when handling sensitive employee information.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while contributing positively as a member of a collaborative team.
Experience
  • Post-secondary education in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Payroll Administration, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Bilingualism (English and French) is required.
  • 2-5 years of payroll processing experience in a high-volume payroll environment.
  • Experience processing Canadian payroll, with U.S. payroll processing experience considered an asset.
  • Experience with Workday or another enterprise HRIS/payroll system is considered an asset.
  • National Payroll Institute Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) designation is preferred.
  • Candidates actively working toward their PCP certification will also be considered.
