Job description

Location: 175 John Street, Hamilton

Schedule: 8 am to 4 pm.

Wage: $17.20 to $18.00

Type: Part Time Hourly

At Detour Coffee Roasters, we believe in roasting friendly coffees that have the potential to transform a daily routine into moments to look forward to! We are currently seeking a Barista for our Detour team. If you are a proactive individual with experience as a barista, we invite you to be part of our team.

About The Position

We are looking for a candidate who has a passion for coffee, community, and enjoys working as part of a team. Candidates must possess a strong business sense, a natural affinity for service, and have outstanding emotional intelligence and soft skills. The successful candidate will be excited at the chance to grow a coffee-focused hospitality business and embrace the challenges that come along with it.

General Responsibilities
  • Support coffee menu planning and recipe development across the entire Detour coffee ecosystem.
  • Continue to enhance collaboration with our partners at Detour Coffee Roasters.
  • Represent the brand within the specialty coffee community.
  • Act with integrity, honesty, and knowledge that promote the culture, values, and mission of Dark Horse.
  • Follow health and safety policies and provide management with feedback on how we can improve our processes to best ensure the safety of all staff and customers.
  • Support all products and services at Detour including food, pastry, and merchandising.
  • Demonstrate strategic understanding of food service operations by providing recommendations and executing (when necessary) ordering, inventory management, queue management, and more.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by following standards and anticipating customer and store needs by constantly evaluating the environment and customers for cues.
  • Follow all operational policies and procedures, including those for cash handling and safety and security during each shift.
  • Take food and beverage orders using the current system (when necessary).
  • Maintain regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Experience within a coffee program.
  • Well-developed personal brand and a proven ability to build relationships across an industry or sector; should be an active member of the Toronto specialty coffee community.
  • A proven executor that has participated in the successful growth of food properties.
  • Comfortable with key hospitality software including POS, scheduling, and purchasing systems.
  • Highly accountable and well-organized, with an ability to oversee a team of staff and prioritize multiple projects effectively.
  • An insatiable curiosity and willingness to learn, anchored in a constant pursuit of personal development.
  • Collaborative and innovative consensus builder that solicits 360-degree feedback and can inspire and influence staff, consumers, and other stakeholders.
  • A positive ambassador with strong communication skills and a genuine kindness, thoughtfulness, and a sense that the glass is always at least half full.
Good to Have Experience
  • Barista: 1 year (required).
  • Hospitality: 3 years (preferred).
  • Specialty coffee: 1 year (preferred).
