Monarch Industries Limited is seeking an Automation Engineer-in-Training to help design, build, commission, and continuously improve automated manufacturing systems within our Winnipeg facility.

You will work on mechanical, electrical, controls, robotics, and software components to move ideas from concept to production, with exposure to cutting-edge Industry 4.0 tech and real-time data analytics.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Mechatronics Engineering.
  • Registered or eligible to register as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (EGM).
  • Experience with industrial automation, equipment design, or programming is a plus.

Job description

We are looking for an Automation Engineer-in-Training (EIT) to join our Advanced Manufacturing team and help design, build, commission, and continuously improve the next generation of automated manufacturing systems within our facility.

This is a hands-on engineering position suited to someone who enjoys bringing together mechanical, electrical, controls, robotics, and software systems to solve real manufacturing challenges. You will work directly with production equipment and automation engineers - helping take ideas from concept and design through programming, installation, commissioning, and production support.

The role will also provide exposure to some of the most advanced technologies being introduced into our manufacturing environment, including industrial robotics, machine vision, connected equipment, Industry 4.0 technologies, real-time machine data, advanced analytics, and emerging applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning.

Working under the guidance of experienced engineering and automation personnel, you will have the opportunity to develop broad automation expertise while contributing directly to projects that improve safety, quality, productivity, and manufacturing capability.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Support the design, implementation and advancement of automated manufacturing equipment, tooling, fixtures, and production processes.
  • Assist with the mechanical and electrical design of automated equipment, including component selection, layouts, schematics, controls architecture, and system integration.
  • Develop, modify, test, and troubleshoot PLC, HMI, motion-control, robotic, and machine-vision systems under appropriate technical guidance.
  • Support the integration and programming of industrial robotic systems used for applications such as welding, material handling, machine tending, inspection, and other manufacturing processes.
  • Assist with the development and deployment of machine-vision systems for inspection, verification, measurement, process control, and automated quality applications.
  • Participate in the commissioning and start-up of new or modified equipment, including functional testing, debugging, optimization, documentation, training, and production hand-off.
  • Work closely with production, maintenance, engineering, quality, information technology, and other stakeholders to identify opportunities, understand requirements, and implement practical automation solutions.
  • Troubleshoot automated manufacturing equipment and systematically identify root causes and corrective actions across mechanical, electrical, controls, robotic, and software systems.
  • Support Industry 4.0 initiatives including machine connectivity, industrial data collection, equipment monitoring, dashboards, manufacturing analytics, and the integration of shop-floor equipment with broader business systems.
  • Participate in the evaluation and implementation of emerging technologies including artificial intelligence, machine learning, advanced sensing, computer vision, and data-driven manufacturing applications.
  • Develop and maintain machine interfaces, dashboards, HMI applications, and other tools that help operators, maintenance personnel, and production teams understand and improve equipment performance.
  • Create and maintain mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, bills of materials, operating instructions, programs, , and technical documentation.
  • Assist with project planning, cost estimates, equipment specifications, procurement, vendor coordination, installation activities, and tracking of project deliverables.
  • Participate in equipment design reviews, risk assessments, machine-safety reviews, commissioning activities, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Work directly on the manufacturing floor during equipment installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and process improvement activities.
  • Stay current with developments in industrial automation, robotics, controls, machine vision, artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing technologies, and help identify where they can be practically applied within the business.
  • Actively and enthusiastically engage in Company vision, mission and values.

Education and Experience Required:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline from an accredited post-secondary program.
  • Registered, or eligible to register, as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (EGM).
  • Practical exposure to industrial automation, manufacturing equipment, machine design, electrical controls, robotics, or programming through employment, co-op experience, academic projects, or personal projects is an asset.
  • Experience creating or interpreting mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, technical specifications, and bills of materials is an asset.
  • PLC programming experience is an asset; experience with Beckhoff controls and TwinCAT is a strong asset.
  • Experience with industrial robotics, robotic programming, end-of-arm tooling, safety systems, or robot-to-machine communications is an asset.
  • Experience with machine-vision or computer-vision systems, cameras, lighting, inspection systems, or automated measurement applications is an asset.
  • Experience with industrial communication protocols, machine connectivity, or integrating equipment with other systems is an asset.
  • Experience with Ignition by Inductive Automation, SCADA systems, HMI development, industrial data collection, manufacturing dashboards, or historian systems is an asset.
  • Exposure to artificial intelligence, machine learning, data analytics, or computer vision through academic, professional, or personal projects is an asset.
  • Hands-on electrical, controls-panel, instrumentation, or industrial wiring experience is a significant asset.
  • Hands-on mechanical, machining, welding, fabrication, equipment-building, or prototyping experience is a significant asset.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing or industrial environment is an asset.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work effectively with production employees, tradespeople, engineers, technical specialists, vendors, and business stakeholders.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to document technical work clearly and accurately.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a small, collaborative, cross-functional team.
  • Driven to continuously learn and develop technical expertise across multiple engineering and automation disciplines.
  • Able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment while maintaining close alignment with production requirements.
