Assistant Professor Teaching Stream Faculty Position

Our main campus is situated on the Haldimand Tract, the land granted to the Six Nations that includes six miles on each side of the Grand River. Our active work toward reconciliation takes place across our campuses through research, learning, teaching, and community building, and is coordinated within the Office of Indigenous Relations.

The Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) in the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo invites applications for a probationary appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream. A Master’s degree in mathematics, computer science, or a related discipline is preferred, but candidates with different educational backgrounds and sufficient mathematical background will be considered. Candidates are expected to have teaching experience at the post-secondary or secondary level. Candidates are expected to have either experience working with Indigenous students in Canada or experience with Indigenization in mathematics and / or computing education.

The successful candidate will be First Nations, Métis, or Inuk (Inuit) with lived experience of Indigenous worldviews, cultures and values and strong ties to First Nations, Métis and / or Inuit communities. We ask each interested applicant to include a statement indicating if they identify as First Nations, Métis, or Inuk in their cover letter. Supporting documentation for membership / citizenship in an Indigenous community will be required and possibly additional information about community connection, family, and relationship to working with Indigenous communities / knowledges may be required, if an applicant is invited for an interview.

Preference will be given to applicants with one or more of the following :

  • Experience in education, outreach or enrichment activities at the elementary or secondary school level in mathematics and / or computing.
  • Experience teaching mathematics and / or computing at the secondary school level and / or developing resources for secondary school teachers and students.

Responsibilities of the successful candidate will include :

  • a normal teaching load of four one-term teaching tasks per year in mathematics and / or computer science,
  • a leadership role in the CEMC’s efforts to support the Indigenization of mathematics and / or computing education in K to 12 schools across Canada,
  • liaising with the Faculty of Mathematics Equity Officer, University’s Office of Indigenous Relations and Indigenous Knowledges and Anti-Racism unit, and
  • participation in the extensive array of CEMC activities, including student and teacher workshops, development of online resources, and contest preparation and administration.

Depending on the experience and background of the successful candidate, responsibilities may also include :

  • mentoring of Indigenous undergraduate and graduate students in the Faculty of Mathematics, and
  • the possibility of consulting with faculty colleagues interested in better understanding how to incorporate Indigenous pedagogies in their instruction.

The anticipated start date is August 1, 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The salary range for this position is $80,000 to $130,000. The CEMC ( / / cemc.uwaterloo.ca) is Canada's largest and most recognized outreach organization for promoting and creating activities and materials in mathematics and computer science. The CEMC is housed within the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo. The CEMC’s activities include 15 mathematics and computing contests with more than 265 000 registrations annually, an extensive school visiting program, a variety of face-to-face and virtual workshops and conferences for students and teachers, a large suite of free online resources, and an online Master’s program aimed specifically at secondary school mathematics teachers. The Faculty of Mathematics (math) is the largest concentration of mathematical and computer science talent in the world. With more than 9000 graduate and undergraduate students, 300 full-time professors, and 500 courses in mathematics, statistics and computer science, the Faculty is a powerhouse of discovery and innovation.
