Assistant Professor position

As part of a major expansion of its research programs in Health Professions Education, the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa invites applications for the Department of Innovation in Medical Education.

The University of Ottawa is recognized nationally and internationally as a leading university and the largest bilingual university (French and English) in the world. Located on the unceded territory of the Anishinaabe-Algonquin people, in the heart of downtown Ottawa, it contributes significantly to the economy, culture and quality of life of Canada’s capital.

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in Anatomical Science Education. A primary role of the successful candidate will be to teach in and support French and English language human anatomy education in both the undergraduate medical program and the Master of Applied Science in Anatomical Sciences Education graduate program. The successful candidate will have a PhD and demonstrated ability to lead a program of scholarship and/or research relevant to Health Professions Education. Human dissection-based laboratory experience and expertise with active learning strategies would be essential.

The Department of Innovation in Medical Education (DIME) will be the primary academic home for the successful applicant. DIME boasts a vibrant education research community, with many linkages including, but not limited to, Montfort Hospital, the Institut du Savoir Montfort, the Ottawa Hospital, the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, and the University of Ottawa Skills and Simulation Centre.

This position offers protected time for research, resources to assist in grant capture, support for individual professional development and opportunities for productive collaboration with clinicians, researchers, and educators from a variety of disciplines.

Title of the position: Assistant Professor. The higher ranks will be considered according to budgetary approval.

Duties: Academic staff functions include, in varying proportions:

  • teaching
  • scholarly activities such as research, artistic or literary creation, or professional work
  • academic service
  • graduate student supervision

Terms: New tenure-track position

Wage: Salary scale for an Assistant Professor starts at $99,377 and the salary scale for an Associate Professor starts at $109,776 (as of May 1, 2025). Note: salary for higher ranks is commensurate according to rank and experience.

Skills requirements:

- Education: PhD in biological sciences, health professions education or other relevant discipline

- Work experience:

o Demonstrated excellent scholarship and/or research track record in a relevant domain and potential to lead a high-quality independent research program with peer-reviewed funding and dissemination at the national and/or international level;

o Demonstrated track record in teaching and training at the undergraduate and/or graduate level and a demonstrated ability for interdisciplinary collaboration;

o The successful candidate must have the ability to teach in a cadaveric laboratory;

o Excellent communication skills in English and French.

Selected candidates will be invited for an interview (including a research seminar, interview with the selection committee, simulated teaching exercise, and meetings with members of the Faculty of Medicine).

A brief statement (2 pages maximum) indicating research interests should be submitted, together with a curriculum vitae and a teaching dossier (10 pages maximum).
