Job summary

The District of Saanich is seeking an Assistant Operations Worker in Public Works – Street Operations to perform skilled manual work supporting road maintenance, signs and markings. The role includes layout, preparation for road construction, curb, gutter, sidewalk and catch basin work, landscaping, asphalt paving and traffic-control tasks.

You will operate equipment and participate in storm-response activities, with an emphasis on safety and outdoor, weather-dependent work.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 or equivalent education and experience.
  • Six months civil works experience related to road construction, maintenance, and signs/markings.
  • Traffic Control Person Certificate and First Aid Level 1 certification.
  • Annual renewal of a Driver’s Abstract and a valid Class 5 BC driver’s licence with air brakes.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with layout and preparation for road construction, curb, gutter, sidewalk and catch basin installations.
  • Support asphalt paving, road markings, and electrical conduit work.
  • Operate and maintain equipment and assist with storm-response activities as needed.
  • Perform pothole patching, gravel shouldering, roadside maintenance and traffic-control flagging.

Assistant Operations Worker

PERMANENT FULL-TIME POSITION

The District of Saanich is a vibrant municipality on southern Vancouver Island, delivering essential services that support safe, reliable and well-maintained public infrastructure. Within the Engineering Department’s Public Works Division, Street Operations plays a key role in maintaining the roads, sidewalks, signage and related assets residents and businesses depend on every day.

The Public Works – Street Operations team is seeking an Assistant Operations Worker to perform skilled manual work in support of road maintenance, construction and signs and markings activities. The ideal candidate is safety-conscious, dependable and able to work effectively as part of a crew in a physically demanding outdoor environment.

In this role, you will assist with layout and preparation work for road construction and widening, curb, gutter, sidewalk and catch basin installations, landscaping, gravel road-base grading, asphalt paving, road markings and electrical conduits. You will operate and carry out daily maintenance on equipment such as asphalt hot boxes, cut saws, rollers, power tools, blowers, power washers and paint machines. Responsibilities also include asphalt placement and compaction, concrete work, pothole patching, gravel shouldering, roadside maintenance, traffic-control flagging, graffiti removal and cleaning above-ground infrastructure. You will assist with storm-response activities, including snow and ice control, flooding and wind events, while following all applicable safe-work practices, policies and procedures.

Requirements include Grade 12 or an equivalent combination of education and experience; six months of civil works experience related to road construction, maintenance, and signs and markings; a Traffic Control Person Certificate; Occupational First Aid Level 1 Certification; and annual renewal of a Driver’s Abstract. A valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence with Air Brakes Endorsement is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

The successful candidate will work Monday to Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The work is performed outdoors in all types of weather and requires sufficient health, physical conditioning, strength, stamina and coordination to perform the work.
