National Asphalt is seeking an Assistant Laboratory Manager to oversee testing protocols, maintain equipment, and lead a testing team in Alberta. The role requires strong leadership, deep knowledge of lab procedures, and experience with quality assurance systems.

You will coordinate training, ensure regulatory compliance, and manage records and reports daily. Ideal candidates have 5+ years in lab management, a relevant degree, and the ability to mentor staff.

Qualifications

Minimum 5 years of experience as a Laboratory Manager or similar role.
Degree in Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, or a related field.
Strong knowledge of laboratory procedures, equipment, and safety protocols.
Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
Familiarity with laboratory information systems.
Experience in quality assurance and health and safety regulations.
Ability to mentor and lead a team.
Detail-oriented and analytical mindset.
South African citizen.

Responsibilities

Ensure documented test methods / reference standards are followed during testing.
Prepare daily QC test plan / report.
Identify training needs and provide sessions in consultation with Technical and Quality Managers.
Maintain proper accommodation and environment in the testing area per test standards.
Initiate corrective actions based on testing feedback.
Monitor environment and maintain records per documented procedures.
Maintain literature/manufacturer manuals for reference.
Prepare and follow preventive maintenance schedules for instruments.
Verify and review test records.
Ensure calibration traces to national/international standards and re-calibrate before expiry.
Optimize use of available resources.
Maintain proper records at all stages of testing and quality control.
Review and authorize daily laboratory records.
Ensure safe handling of samples/materials throughout the lab.
Review work sheets after testing completion.
Provide technical training to technicians.
Coordinate inter-laboratory comparisons and evaluate results.
Calculate uncertainty of measurement periodically for each test parameter.
Conduct preventive maintenance of equipment and breakdown maintenance as needed.
Identify requirements for consumables and procure them.
Handle customer complaints and analyse the same.

National Asphalt is looking to employ Assistant Laboratory Manager's.

Duties & Responsibilities

To ensure that the documented test methods / reference standards are followed during the testing.
To prepare daily QC test plan / report.
To identify the training needs of the employees and provide the same in consultation with the Technical and Quality Managers.
To ensure that proper accommodation and environment is maintained in the testing area as per the requirements of the relevant test standards.
To initiate corrective actions based on the feedback of the testing activities.
To ensure that periodic monitoring of the environment to maintain records as per the documented procedure.
To ensure that all the available literatures including manufacturers manual are maintained.
To prepare preventive maintenance schedule and intermediate checks schedule for all the instruments and to ensure that the employee follow the same.
To verify and review test records.
To ensure that calibration of all the equipment are traceable to the national / international standards and having valid relationship.
To re–calibrate the equipment used in the testing before the validity expires.
To ensure optimum use of available resources.
To ensure that the proper records are maintained at all stages of testing and quality control.
To review and authorize daily records of the laboratory.
To ensure safe and proper handling of the samples / materials throughout the laboratory.
To review the Work sheet of each testing after completion of necessary testing work.
To provide technical training to the technicians as identified.
To initiate inter laboratory comparison and to evaluate the results of inter laboratory comparison.
To ensure that uncertainty of measurement is calculated periodically for each test parameter.
To conduct preventive maintenance of the equipment.
To handle breakdown maintenance of the equipment soon as possible.
To identify or receive the requirements for consumable purchase from the concern employees and to procure the same.
To handle all customer complaints and analyse the same.
